Women's Hockey Downed in Season Opener against UM-Dearborn

(Dearborn, MI) – Concordia women's hockey opened their season with a Friday afternoon game at UM-Dearborn. The Cardinals started fast and jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period, but the Wolverines eventually came back for a 5-2 win.

 

Rose Lennon played the first period in goal for Concordia. The Cardinals struck first just under 4 minutes into the contest when Sienna Basile scored on a quick shot with Brooklyn Watkins and Grace Dodgson drawing the assists. Concordia went up 2-0 with a powerplay marker with 8:23 to play. Grace Dodgson took a feed from behind the net and fired a top-corner wristshot with Brooklyn Watkins and Sienna Basile assisting. CUAA led 2-0 after the first period.

Eva Kingston came in to play goalie in the second period for the rest of the game. Mallory Collins won the opening faceoff and both teams traded chances, but UM-Dearborn netted two goals to tie the game. At the second intermission the score was tied 2-2.

UM-Dearborn broke the tie with 11:38 to play in the game and netted three total goals in the period. The Cardinals continued to pressure the Wolverines and earned a 5-on-3 powerplay late in the game, but the team fell 5-2 as time expired.

 

Concordia will hold their home opener next Friday, September 29 when they host the University of Michigan at 8:30pm.
