Women's Hockey falls to Michigan in home opener

(Canton, MI) Concordia Women's Hockey had their home opener Friday evening with a conference matchup against the University of Michigan. The Cardinals were tied with Michigan after the first period, but a strong second period from the Wolverines helped them defeat the Cardinals 5-2.

 

Makayla Steinmetz and Lauren Benoit both scored goals for Concordia in the game. Eva Kingston started between the pipes, stopping 31 shots throughout the contest.

 

 

The Cardinals were able to kill a pair of power play opportunities for the Wolverines early on in the first period. With under two minutes remaining, Michigan was able to score the first goal of the game. Less than a minute later the Cardinals responded with a goal of their own from Makayla Steinmetz to even things up after a period of play.

 

In the second period, the Wolverine offense scored a minute and a half in to take the lead. Michigan would go on to score another two goals in the next five minutes to take a three goal advantage into the final period.

 

Michigan added to their lead two minutes into the third to go up by four. The Cardinals were able to cut into that lead with a goal from Lauren Benoit with five minutes remaining, but the final score would conclude at 5-2.  

 

 

The Cardinals will be back in action on Saturday, October 14th for the first of two road games at Minnesota. Puck drop is set for 6:30 at Ridder Arena.
