Late goal gives Michigan State the edge over Women's Hockey

(Canton, MI) Concordia Women's Hockey returned to the ice Friday evening for a CCWHA matchup against Michigan State. The Cardinals took the lead twice, but both teams the Spartans found a way to draw even. With under two minutes remaining Michigan State netted a power play goal to earn the 3-2 win over Concordia.

 

 

The Cardinals were aggressive out of the gate, and were finally able to breakthrough when Skylar Croft put the Cardinals on the board. Concordia was able to kill the lone penalty of the period, even getting solid looks on goal a player down. Michigan State knotted the game up with 13 seconds remaining in the period to make it 1-1 going into the first intermission.

 

In Concordia's first power play chance of the game, Makayla Steinmetz scored off of a pass from Sara Kaczmarek to give Concordia the lead once again. Five minutes later the Spartans evened it up again on a breakaway, making it 2-2 after two periods played.

 

The third and final period was a back-and-forth affair with neither team getting much headway. A late penalty gave the Spartans the chance to take their first lead of the game off of the power play with less than two minutes remaining. That proved to be the game winning goal, as Michigan State ultimately won 3-2.

 

The Cardinals will hit the road for a game at Michigan State Saturday, October 28th. Puck drop is set for 5:35 at the Munn Ice Arena.
