Women's Hockey picks up first win of the season with 6-3 victory at Michigan State

(East Lansing, MI) Concordia Women's Ice Hockey team traveled to East Lansing to take on Michigan State at Munn Ice Arena, who beat the Cardinals in their last matchup 3-2, on Saturday October 28th at 5:30 p.m. and this time it was the Cardinals who came on top with a 6-3 victory to get the first win on the season. With the victory it gives the Cardinals a record of 1-7 and 1-4 in conference play. 

 

Michigan State got things going with a very quick goal in the first minute of the game to take an early 1-0 lead over the Cardinals. That goal was scored by Asher Printzen. The game went scoreless for the next nine minutes until the Cardinals finally got one to go in the 11th minute of the game to tie the game up 1-1. That goal was scored by Emily Greer. Concordia answered that goal with another one right away in the 12th minute to take the lead 2-1. The goal was scored by Makayla Steinmetz. At the end of the 1st period Concordia was on top 2-1.

 

Just like the 1st period, Michigan State was able to strike first and tie the game up 2-2 in the 3rd minute. That goal was scored by Kiera Modder. Once again the Cardinals weren't going to go away and answered that goal with back to back goals of their own in the 15th and 20th minute to take a commanding 4-2 lead. Those goals were scored by Hope Taucher and Makayla Steinmetz. Concordia would get 14 more shots up in the second period, however they would not be able to cash any of those in and would enter the 3rd period with a two point lead against Michigan State.

 

Unlike the first two periods it was Concordia who struck first and got a quick goal in the second minute to almost put Michigan State away with a 5-2 lead. That goal came from Dakota Harmon. However, Michigan State wasn't going to go away just yet as they responded with a goal of their own in the 4th minute to cut the lead back down to two. That goal was scored by Jessica Santi. 11 minutes went by without a score until in the 15th minute Concordia finally put Michigan State away to make the game 6-3. That goal came from Emma Shore. Michigan State had nine more tries to come back and score more goals but were unable to convert, giving Concordia its first win of the season.  

 

Concordia's leader in goals was Makayla Steinmetz who had two, and their leader in assists was Sienna Basile who had three. Concordia had a total of eight penalty minutes with four infractions, and had 43 total shots. Concordia's goalkeeper Eva Kingston had 26 saves against 29 shots. 

Michigan State's leader in goals was a three-way tie between Jessica Santi, Kiera Modder, and Asher Printzen who each had one. They had a total of five assists coming from five different players. Just like Concordia they had a total of eight penalty minutes with four infractions, and had 29 total shots. Michigan State's goalkeeper Brooklyn Maddox had 37 saves against 43 shots.  

 

Concordia will look to continue this momentum when they travel down to Pennsylvania to face off against Penn State on November 3rd.
