Women's Tennis goes 2-1 over the weekend

Concordia Women's Tennis competed in three matches over the weekend, hosting Lawrence Tech for a WHAC matchup, and traveling to Grand Rapids to play Grace Christian and Saint Francis (IN). The Cardinals fell to the Blue Devils on Friday, but bounced back for an 8-1 win over Grace Christian and a 4-3 victory against Saint Francis.

 

Concordia 1 – Lawrence Tech 5

In a match cut short due to time constraints, the doubles point was not decided. Jacey Powell and Savannah Borrego were the only pair to get their full match in, and fell in the third slot 6-0.

 

Jacey Powell earned the lone Cardinals' point in the match with a default win in the #6 match. Elle Fritcha and Hollie Johnson both took five games in #2 and #5 Singles respectfully. Isabella Macquet and Jules Meads each took a pair of games in the #1 and #4 slots, while Savannah Borrego was swept in the #3 Single match.

 

Concordia 8 – Grace Christian 1

The Cardinals came out of the gate strong against the Tigers, earning all three doubles points. Elle Fritcha and Isabella Macquet swept their opponent in the top match, while Jadyn Hackmann and Hollie Johnson took the second match 8-3. Jorja Vartoogian and Jules Meads earned the point in the third slot by default.

 

Elle Fritcha was dominant in the #2 Singles match sweeping her Tigers opponent without dropping a game. Isabella Macquet only dropped a pair in the top match while Hollie Johnson and Jorja Vartoogian won closer contests in the third and fourth slots. Johnson won (6-2, 6-3) while Vartoogian came away with the (6-2, 6-4) victory. Jules Meads fell in a closely contested #5 match (5-7, 2-6). Jadyn Hackmann won the #6 match by default.  

 

Concordia 4 – Saint Francis (IN) 3

Concordia's final match of the weekend came down to the wire, with the Cardinals winning by a single point. The Cards won the doubles point with Isabella Macquet and Elle Fritcha in the top match and Hollie Johnson and Jadyn Hackmann in the third slot both winning narrowly, 6-4. Jules Meads and Savannah Borrego were swept in the second match.

 

All six singles matches were hard fought, with neither team running away with an easy point in the match. In the top two matches, both Isabella Macquet and Elle Fritcha saw their matches go to a third set. In both cases the Cardinals came away victorious in comeback fashion, as Macquet won the top match (1-6, 6-4, 10-5) and Fritcha took the second match (4-6, 6-2, 10-6). Hollie Johnson won her #5 Singles match (6-4, 6-4), giving the Cardinals their fourth point for the win. Saint Francis won the other three singles matches, with the Cardinals not going down easily. In the sixth slot, Jadyn Hackmann lost a close one (3-6, 5-7). Jules Meads and Savannah Borrego both fell in their matches, but took 6 and 5 games respectfully.

 

 

The Cardinals will be back in action on Friday, April 19th when they return to Grand Rapids to resume their match against Aquinas and then face off against #RV Cornerstone. They will then compete in the Grace Christian Doubles Tournament on the next day.
