(Huntington, IN) – Concordia volleyball kicked off their 2023 season on Tuesday morning with a pair of games at the Huntington Tri-Match. The Cardinals came from behind to down Huntington 3-2 in game 1 and swept Trinity Christian in game 2.
Game 1 – CUAA 3, HU 2
Kayla Peters led the Cardinals with 15 kills. Abigail Austin made a team-high 47 sets. McKenzie Peters led the back end with 23 digs. Julianna Weems had a team-best 5 blocks.
Set 1 – HU 25, CUAA 22
Jacey Powell had the first kill for Concordia. Down 24-16 late in the set, the Cardinals made a 6-0 run to pull within 2 points but Huntington finished off the set.
Set 2 – HU 25, CUAA 16
Julianna Weems made the first Cardinal kill in set 2. Abigail Austin notched back-to-back kills early on and the team stayed close but fell in set 2.
Set 3 – CUAA 25, HU 16
Jacey Powell opened set 3 with a kill. The Cardinals jumped out to a 10-1 lead when Madalyn Lisman and Kayla Peters combined for a block. Korie Fowler made an ace along with back-to-back aces from Abigail Austin, pacing the team to a set 3 win.
Set 4 – CUAA 25, HU 20
Jacey Powell had the first kill in set 4. Breann June was a powerful force making kills and helped pace the Cardinals to a 25-20 win to force set 5.
Set 5 – CUAA 16, HU 14
Kayla Peters had 3 kills to start set 5. The Cardinals overcame an early deficit and Peters smashed the winning kill to take game 1.
Game 2 – CUAA 3, TCC 0
Breann June led the team with 10 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 32 assists and 15 digs.
Set 1 – CUAA 25, TCC 15
Julianna Weems had the first kill. The Cardinals built a steady lead paced by aces from Kayla Peters and McKenzie Peters. Breann June made solid kills down the stretch and Concordia took set 1.
Set 2 – CUAA 25, TCC 23
Breann June started set 2 with a kill. June added 3 more early kills and an ace from Kayla Peters put the team up 15-14. Trailing 22-17, the Cardinals made an 8-1 run to close set 4 with Kayla Peters making the winning kill.
Set 3 – CUAA 25, TCC 21
Jacey Powell had the first Cardinal kill in set 3. Both teams traded runs throughout the set with Madalyn Lisman adding two kills. Trailing 21-17, an 8-0 run clinched the game for Concordia with Courtney Kalahar and Abigail Austin making the winning block.
Concordia will host Kuyper College tomorrow at 6pm.
