Volleyball splits first day of Liz Lykowski Tournament

(Fort Wayne, IN) – Concordia volleyball played the first day of the Liz Lykowski Tournament, hosted by Indiana Tech, on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals fell to Indiana Southeast 3-1 in a hard-fought game 1, but the team claimed a 3-0 sweep over Saint Ambrose in game 2.

 

Game 1 – IUSE 3, CUAA 1

Claudia Grepke led the team with 17 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 43 assists along with 22 digs. McKenzie Peters secured the back end with 23 digs.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, IUSE 23

Megan Neumann had the first Concordia kill. The set was closely contested throughout with Jacey Powell and Julianna Weems combining for a block. The lead changed hands late but the Cardinals surged back with Weems making the winning block.

 

Set 2 – IUSE 26, CUAA 24

Claudia Grepke made the first kill in set 2. The Cardinals trailed 13-6 midway through the set but fought back to a 19-18 lead with kills from Claudia Grepke and Breann June. A Kayla Peters kill gave the team a 24-23 lead, but IUSE came back to take set 2.

 

Set 3 – IUSE 25, CUAA 22

Breann June had the first Cardinal kill in set 3. Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Kayla Peters had strong early performances and Claudia Grepke was a force late in the set. However, IUSE snuck ahead and took set 3.

 

Set 4 – IUSE 26, CUAA 24

Kayla Peters notched the first kill in set 4. The set once again was closely contested throughout with Peters and Claudia Grepke continuing to lead the offense. A kill from Grepke tied the set 23-23, but IUSE pulled away to clinch the game.

 

Game 2 - CUAA 3, SAU 0

Claudia Grepke led the team with 9 kills. Abigail Austin was first with 23 assists. Kayla Peters led the back end with 15 digs.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, SAU 13

Emiline Wood started a 5-0 run for CUAA with two aces during the run. The Cardinals controlled the set with Kayla Peters and Breann June making strong kills. Korie Fowler had an ace and another service ace from Peters closed out set 1.

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, SAU 10

Madalyn Lisman had the first kill in set 2 as part of an 8-0 run with two more Emiline Wood aces. Jessalyn Peavyhouse smashed back-to-back kills and Leah Troyer clinched the set with a service ace.

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, SAU 20

Madalyn Lisman made the first kill in set 3. Breann June made strong hits for kills and the Cardinals built a 21-14 lead before holding off a late SAU run. A powerful kill by Claudia Grepke finished off the sweep.

 

The Cardinals will play tomorrow against Goshen at 10am and Indiana Northwest at 2pm.
