Volleyball rounds out the Liz Lykowski Tournament with a sweep

(Fort Wayne, IN) - The Liz Lykowski Tournament came to an end on Saturday as the Concordia Cardinals volleyball team rounded out the tournament going 2-0 on the final day and 3-1 throughout the two-day tournament. 

 

Senior setter Abigail Austin was named to the All-Tournament team after tallying 152 assists and 52 digs throughout the four games. 

 

Game 1: Concordia 3, Goshen 1

Set 1: Concordia 25, Goshen 15

Cardinal's Megan Neumann scored the first point of the set with a kill on an assist from Abigail Austin. After going down 4-2, CUAA would tack on four straight points with three from Kayla Peters and one from Austin. The Cardinals would start to run away with the set after scoring 10 of 12 midway through the set. The first set would end on a Korie Fowler kill. 

 

Set 2: Concordia 25, Goshen 15

Abigail Austin started out serving for the second set of the day for the Cardinals, aiding them to a 7-1 start to the game with two aces, as well as Emilee Wood earned an ace as well. Another Cardinal six-point run would extend the lead as Abigail Austin and Breann June would each earn two kills. CUAA would score seven of the final 11 points as Korie Fowler would once again get the final kill. 

 

Set 3: Goshen 25, Concordia 22

The third set saw the Cards jump to a 5-2 lead after several kills from Kayla Peters, Jessayln Peavyhouse, and Claudia Grepke. CUAA would keep the pressure on when a Peavyhouse kill would make it 17-12. But that lead would not be enough as the Maple Leafs would score 13 of the final 18 points to win the set. 

 

Set 2: Concordia 26, Goshen 24

Jacey Powell would earn the first kill of the final set of game 1. Multiple kills from Claudia Grepke, Powell, and Kayla Peters would aid the Cardinals to jump out to a lead of 11-8. The Maple Leafs would proceed to score 10 of the next 15. A kill from Jessalyn Peavyhouse would tie the game though. Kayla Peters would score three of the final five points to get the first win of the day. 

 

Game 2: Concordia 3, IU Northwest 0

Set 1: Concordia 25, IU Northwest 16

Both teams would jump out of the gate to an 8-8 tie. From that point, the Cards would score 17 points and take the first set after getting aid from Redhawk's errors and kills from Kayla Peters, Claudia Grepke, and Megan Neumann

 

Set 2: Concordia 25, IU Northwest 10

Set 2 saw the Cards take a 3-0 lead, as Claudia Grepke earned back-to-back kills and Kayla Peters would get the third point. The Cards would take full control of the set as they would only allow 10 points. Megan Neumann and Madalyn Lisman would tack on kills in the set. 

 

Set 3: Concordia 25, IU Northwest 22

Breann June got the first point of the set for the Cardinals. Both teams would battle back and forth all throughout the set. Julianna Weems and June would get kills that would tie the set at 17. From there the Cardinals would be in control of the set as a Redhawk's error would end the game.

The Cardinals will be back in action on Wednesday, September 13 as they will play Indiana Tech at home at 7 PM.
