Volleyball downs UNOH in five sets

(Lima, OH) – Concordia volleyball traveled to UNOH for a Friday night WHAC matchup.  The Cardinals won the first two sets and withstood a Racer rally to claim a five-set win.

 

Kayla Peters led the team with 16 kills.  Abigail Austin had a team-high 49 assists.  McKenzie Peters led the back end with 37 digs.  Claudia Grepke was first with 4 blocks.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, UNOH 21

Claudia Grepke had the first Cardinal kill.  Concordia built a 12-3 lead with aces from Leah Troyer and Korie Fowler.  UNOH tightened the set to a 23-21 lead late but the Cardinals picked up the final two points.

 

Set 2 – CUAA 25, UNOH 22

Megan Neumann made the first kill in set 2.  CUAA made a 6-0 run early on to retake the lead and Breann June had 3 straight kills midway through the set.  Trailing 22-19, the Cardinals made another 6-0 run with Jessalyn Peavyhouse notching the winning kill.

 

Set 3 – UNOH 25, CUAA 21

Madalyn Lisman opened set 3 with a kill.  The Cardinals started strong, going up 11-2 after a Leah Troyer ace.  However, the Racers battled back to take the lead midway through the set and forced a set 4.

 

Set 4 – UNOH 25, CUAA 20

Breann June started set 4 with a kill.  The Cardinals went up 3-1 after a block from Claudia Grepke and Julianna Weems, but the Racers pulled ahead and led throughout the set.  Emiline Wood had an ace and Kayla Peters made strong kills, but UNOH forced set 5.

 

Set 5 – CUAA 15, UNOH 13

Breann June opened set 5 with a kill.  Madalyn Lisman and Claudia Grepke teamed up for a block and added a kill apiece.  Julianna Weems put the Cardinals up 8-6 at the halfway point and the team slowly inched closer to 15 points.  A well-placed tip by Kayla Peters over the net clinched the victory.

 

Concordia will return home Saturday to host Lawrence Tech at 5pm.
