Volleyball downed by Lawrence Tech in 5

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals returned to the Cardinal Fieldhouse for the second time this week, as they would go up against the Blue Devils from Lawrence Tech University. The Cardinals would come away with the _______. 

 

The Cardinals entered the match at 11-3 overall and 2-1 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play, while the Blue Devils came in at 3-4 and 1-2 in WHAC play. 

 

Game 1: 

Set 1: Concordia 25, Lawrence Tech 14

Lawrence Tech grabbed the first two points of the set before they had an attacking error, followed by a service ace from Emiline Wood and a kill from Kayla Peters. The next five points would go to CUAA with K. Peters grabbing two more kills and an ace from Leah Troyer. Another big Cardinal run gaining five of the next seven points to grab a 13-5 lead. Abigail Austin would start a CUAA streak serving which included two aces. The Cards would take the final point on a Blue Devil attacking error. 

 

Set 2: Lawrence Tech 25, Concordia 20

Claudia Grepke grabbed the first kill of set 2, she got another kill to make the score 3-1. The teams would battle back and forth throughout the set as LTU would go on a run of 10-3 to take a commanding 19-11 lead. A Jacey Powell kill would end the run as the Cards attempted to mount a comeback. Ultimately the Card's comeback would fall short as LTU took set two 25-20.

 

Set 3: Lawrence Tech 26, Concordia 24

Breann June earned the first kill of the third set to even the score at one. Teams would once again battle back and forth to a 10-10 tie when Emiline Wood scored an ace. Another tightly contested back-and-forth play would see kills from Megan Neumann, Jacey Powell, and Breann June to get the set to a 24-22 CUAA lead. The final four points would go to LTU, as the set ended on a service ace. 

 

Set 4: Concordia 25, Lawrence Tech 22

Jacey Powell got the scoring started in the fourth set with a kill. The Cards would go on and score 11 of the first 15 points in the set on a Breann June kill. Julianna Weems, Kayla Peters, and Powell would tack on multiple kills as the Cardinals would take a 19-16 lead in the set. Emiline Wood scored yet another ace to end the fourth set to force a fifth and final set. 

 

Set 5: Lawrence Tech 16, Concordia 14

A very tightly contested fifth set saw Breann June grab the first kill of the set and the biggest lead be two points by both teams. With the game tied at 10, neither team could get a lead larger than two as they battled back and forth. Lawrence would finally grab the final two points with the set tied at 14 to seal the victory.

The Cardinals are back in action next Wednesday, September 20 when they travel to Dearborn, Michigan for a matchup against the Wolverines of Michigan-Dearborn with the match starting at 7 PM.
