Volleyball falls in tight five-set match with UM-Dearborn

(Dearborn, MI) – Concordia volleyball traveled to UM-Dearborn on Wednesday night for a WHAC conference matchup.  The Cardinals battled hard and went to yet another five-set game, but the Wolverines took the match 3-2.

Kayla Peters led the team with 14 kills and 4 blocks.  Abigail Austin had a team-high 42 assists. McKenzie Peters secured the back end with 23 digs.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, UMD 21

Jacey Powell made the first Concordia kill.  The team overcame an early deficit with back-to-back kills from Breann June tying the set 9-9.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse made three straight kills for the first Cardinal lead and Jacey Powell notched the winning kill.

 

Set 2 – UMD 25, CUAA 16

Kayla Peters had the first Cardinal kill in set 2.  Concordia took an early 6-5 lead after a game-tying ace by Korie Fowler and a block from Abigail Austin and Jessalyn Peavyhouse.  However, UM-Dearborn surged back ahead and took set 2.

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, UMD 21

Jacey Powell started set 3 with a kill.  Emiline Wood had an early ace and the Cardinals battled ahead with Kayla Peters making strong kills.  The Wolverines tightened the set late with CUAA holding a 23-21 lead, but a Jacey Powell kill and a UMD error gave set 3 to the Cardinals.

 

Set 4 – UMD 25, CUAA 16

A Breann June kill started a 3-0 run with Jacey Powell adding a thunderous spike.  Breann June made back-to-back kills leading to a 12-12 tie, but the Wolverines eventually pulled ahead and forced set 5 with a win.

 

Set 5 – UMD 15, CUAA 10

Claudia Grepke had the first 2 Cardinal kills in set 5.  Kills by Kayla Peters helped pace Concordia to an 8-4 lead once the teams switched sides.  However, UM-Dearborn began to gain momentum and used an 11-2 run to close out the game.

 

Concordia will return home this Saturday to host rival Siena Heights at 1pm.
