Volleyball takes Cornerstone to five sets but falls 3-2

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia volleyball traveled to Cornerstone on Friday evening to continue WHAC conference play. The contest went right down to the wire as the Cardinals forced a fifth set, but the Golden Eagles came away with a 3-2 win.

Kayla Peters led the team with 19 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 50 assists. McKenzie Peters topped the back end with 30 digs. Jessalyn Peavyhouse was first with 4 blocks.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, CU 21

Kayla Peters had the first Cardinal kill. Leah Troyer added an early ace and Breann June smashed back-to-back kills as Concordia maintained a tight lead throughout the set. Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Claudia Grepke teamed up for two blocks and Madalyn Lisman notched the final two kills.

 

Set 2 – CU 25, CUAA 20

Jessalyn Peavyhouse made the first kill in set 2. Kayla Peters was active with strong kills early and Breann June paced the offense as well. However, Cornerstone eventually took the lead and claimed set 2 to tie the match 1-1.

 

Set 3 – CU 25, CUAA 17

Concordia started on a 3-0 run with an Abigail Austin ace and a Jacey Powell kill. The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead with Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Jacey Powell making a block and Korie Fowler notching an ace. However, Cornerstone surged back and survived a late CUAA run to take set 3.

 

Set 4 – CUAA 25, CU 19

Jacey Powell made the first Concordia kill in set 4. Kayla Peters made a mix of hard hits and well-placed tips for kills and Julianna Weems showed her power as well. Cornerstone began to rally late in the set but the Cardinals held on to force set 5.

 

Set 5 – CU 15, CUAA 11

Breann June opened the final set with a kill. Cornerstone answered with a 6-0 run until Kayla Peters found an open spot for a kill. The Cardinals rallied late in the set, pulling within 12-9 when Emiline Wood snuck an ace past the Cornerstone defense. However, the Golden Eagles claimed the final set 15-11.

 

Concordia will return home to host Aquinas tomorrow at 2pm.
