Volleyball upends Michigan-Dearborn with a 3-1 win

(Ann Arbor, MI) Concordia Women's volleyball team hosted Michigan-Dearborn at the Cardinal Fieldhouse on Wednesday October 18th at 7:00 pm EST. The Cardinals entered the match with a 15-9 overall record and 6-7 in WHAC play. Michigan-Dearborn entered at 10-12 overall and 6-7 in the WHAC season, making it a key matchup with WHAC playoff implications. Concordia was able to win sets one, two, and four with Dearborn only winning set three. Concordia's leader in kills was by Breann June who had 13, and their leader in serve aces was by Emiline Wood who had 4. The Cardinal leader in digs was by McKenzie Peters who had 17.

 

Set 1: Concordia 25, Michigan-Dearborn 15 

Concordia came out strong with four kills from a combination of Claudia Grepke and Breann June, who both had two to start the first set up 6-0. After that, Concordia was able to go on a two point rally and three point rally with a mix of Michigan-Dearborn points in the middle of those. During those rallies Concordia had a couple of kills by Jessalyn Peavyhouse, Kayla Peters, and Breann June. Then Dearborn was able to go on a two point rally and three point rally as well to cut Concordia's lead to six with the score at 16-10. Concordia was able to win the first set 25-15 after a kill by Breann June sealed it. 

 

Set 2: Concordia 25, Michigan-Dearborn 20 

Concordia and Dearborn would each exchange the first sixteen points with the score being tied 8-8. Concordia then found some momentum going on a 7-2 run to make it 15-10. That run was highlighted with kills by Jessalyn Peavyhouse, Kayla Peters, Julianna Weams who each had two, and Claudia Grepke who had one. Dearborn responded with a 7-4 run of their own to cut the lead down to two with the score at 19-17. A service error by Dearborn was able to seal the victory for Concordia, to take a commanding 2-0 lead.  

 

Set 3: Concordia 23, Michigan-Dearborn 25 

Dearborn would start the third set out strong with a commanding 11-3 lead. Concordia started to claw its way back and cut the lead to three with the score being 15-12 after a mix of errors by Dearborn, blocks and kills made by Concordia. Those kills came from Breann June and Jacey Powell. Concordia was able to come all the way back to make it a tie game at 23-23 a piece highlighted by Kayla Peters and Julianna Weems. Dearborn was able to get the last two points of the set to force a game four. 

 

Set 4: Concordia 25, Michigan-Dearborn 17 

Like the first set, Concordia was able to come out with a 7-1 lead with kills from Kayla Peters, Julianna Weems, and Jacey Powell. Dearborn and Concordia would both exchange points back and forth with Dearborn being able to cut the lead down to make the score 12-8. Concordia was able to pull away and win 25-17 with the final point being scored by Abigail Austin

 

Concordia's next game will be on the road as they travel to Adrian, Michigan. to take on Siena Heights on Friday October 20th at 7:00 p.m. as this will be the first of their three game road trip.
