Volleyball upset bid falls short versus Indiana Tech in WHAC Quarterfinal

(Fort Wayne, IN) – #8 seed Concordia volleyball traveled to #1 Indiana Tech on Wednesday night for a WHAC quarterfinal matchup. The Cardinals came in looking for the upset, taking the first set and pushing the Warriors to the limit throughout the entire game. However, Indiana Tech mounted a comeback and took the 3-1 win to advance.

Breann June and Kayla Peters tied for the team lead with 14 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 37 assists. McKenzie Peters led the back end with 20 digs.

 

Set 1 – CUAA 25, IIT 21

Breann June and Julianna Weems combined for a block to start set 1. Kayla Peters made strong kills early on as the set remained closely contested. Breann June and Claudia Grepke also paced the offense as the Cardinals maintained a steady lead. Kayla Peters smashed the winning kill to take set 1.

 

Set 2 – IIT 25, CUAA 20

Claudia Grepke started set 2 with a kill. Emiline Wood added an ace and Julianna Weems notched a pair of kills for a 10-6 lead. Concordia held a 17-16 lead late in the set, but the Warriors used a 9-3 run to tie the match 1-1.

 

Set 3 – IIT 25, CUAA 23

Breann June had the first Cardinal kill in set 3. Kayla Peters notched an ace and Concordia maintained a slim lead throughout most of the set. CUAA held a 21-18 lead later on and a Claudia Grepke kill tied the set 23-23. However, Indiana Tech took the final 2 points to take a 2-1 lead.

 

Set 4 – IIT 25, CUAA 22

Kayla Peters made the first Cardinal kill in set 4. Peters and Madalyn Lisman stayed strong at the net and Concordia once again built a small lead through most of the set. Kayla Peters made three straight CUAA kills down the stretch, giving CUAA a 20-15 lead. However, Indiana Tech slowly mounted a comeback with a 10-5 run to close the game.
