WHAC POD TOURNAMENT PREVIEW: Baseball set to host First Round of WHAC Tournament

(Ann Arbor, MI) - With the regular season in the rearview mirror, Concordia Cardinals Baseball looks toward the postseason with the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament starting this week. Ann Arbor will play host to half of the Tournament bracket as the Cardinals secured the #2 seed following the regular season. 

 

This season, the tournament takes on a different look with now eight teams making the tournament instead of six. The top two teams, Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) and Concordia, will host four teams with UNOH hosting the #4, #5, and #8 teams and Concordia hosting the #3, #6, and #7 teams. Each bracket becomes a double elimination tournament with the winner of each bracket advancing to the WHAC Championship game next week.

ABOUT THE CARDINALS

The Cardinals rounded out the season with a 14-4 win against Madonna to close out a 37-12 regular season and a 24-7 WHAC record, which earned them the #2 seed. Head Coach Zach Johnston is in his 10th season as head coach of the Cardinals and has a 347-182 overall record. 

 

The Cardinal offense is led by Drew Fleming who leads the team in nearly every statistical category. He has 72 hits, 27 home runs, 68 RBIs, and a .444 batting average on the season. Logan Hylek is another threat on the offensive side with 70 hits, 41 RBIs, and a .393 average. Josh Burke is second on the team in home runs with eight, bringing in 36 runners. Jake Kuhlman and Aaron Garner are the two top runners with 25 and 21 stolen bases respectively. 

 

Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys leads the team in wins with six, strikeouts with 49, and a 1.08 ERA. Trey Acker and Bryon Mane both are second on the team with five wins apiece, Mane has accumulated 28 strikeouts and Acker 19. Drew Fleming leads the team with five saves on the season. 

 


ABOUT THE WARRIORS

The #3 seed in the WHAC goes to Indiana Tech with an overall record of 27-22 and a WHAC record of 24-8. At the helm for his 17th season is Kip McWilliams who has accumulated a record of 579-357-2. 

 

Luke Huerta is leading the team with a .405 average on the season with 34 hits and 21 RBIs. Ben Morrison is the team leader in hits with 59 on the season as he has also brought in 24 runners. Eli MacDonald leads the team in the power department with eight doubles, two triples, and nine home runs with a team-leading 57 RBIs. 

 

The pitching side is led by Grant Besser with a 3.45 ERA over 62.2 innings and a 6-3 overall record and 88 strikeouts. Zach Zaborowski has pitched the second most innings this season with 48.0 and has a 3.75 ERA with the second-most strikeouts with 79. 

 


ABOUT THE AQ SAINTS

The Saints earned the #6 seed after finishing the WHAC season at 18-14 and also recording a 26-24 overall record. Head Coach Chris Lamange is in his fifth season at the helm of the program and has a 106-112 overall record. 

 

Nicholas Verdugo leads the team with a .374 batting average as he's collected 52 hits on the year with 25 RBIs. Leading the team in hits is Ramsey Bousseau with 62 on the season and 33 RBIs. Grant Martin has 12 home runs on the season to lead the team and also has 47 RBIs which leads the team. 

 

Conor Gausselin has six wins on the pitching side for the Saints as he leads the team with 63 strikeouts and a 2.54 ERA which is the lowest among the qualified pitchers on the staff. Mason Hill has appeared in 21 games and has a 1.49 ERA over 36.1 innings pitched. He is also third on the team in strikeouts with 48.

 


ABOUT THE SHU SAINTS

The Saints come into the tournament with an overall record of 12-28 and a 15-17 WHAC record. The Saints' head coach, John Kolasinski, is in his 21st season and has recorded a record of 312-644-1 at SHU.

 

Adam Wilding is top on the team with a .380 batting average with 49 hits on the year and a team-high six home runs. Leading the team in hits is Gino Hutchinson with 62 with a .332 batting average and 33 RBIs. Cole VanWassenova is second on the team with 57 hits and has recorded a .358 average and a team-high 42 RBIs. 

 

Luc Olson has recorded a team-high in wins with four over 48.2 innings. Brandon Biggerstaff has 44 strikeouts on the year. Matt Love leads the team in ERA at 3.04.
