Volleyball falls at home against #22 Cornerstone

 

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia volleyball hosted #22 Cornerstone in WHAC conference play on Friday evening.  After falling in the first two sets the Cardinals battled to a victory in set 3, but the Golden Eagles were able to claim a 3-1 win.

 

Kayla Peters led the offense with 11 kills and added a team-leading 19 digs.  Madeline Vnuk had a team-high 25 assists.  Jessalyn Peavyhouse led the Cardinals with 5 blocks.

 

Set 1 – Cornerstone 25, CUAA 18

Kayla Peters had Concordia's first kill of the game.  After falling behind 10-1, the Cardinals slowly fought back to pull within 5 points in a 15-10 deficit.  Kayla Peters continued to add kills and Jessalyn Peavyhouse teamed up with Tara Drinane for a block.  An ace from Peavyhouse led to just a 21-17 deficit, and Madalyn Lisman notched a late block and kill.  However, Cornerstone was able to take set 1.

 

Set 2 – Cornerstone 25, CUAA 11

Breann June made the first Cardinal kill in set 2.  Cornerstone jumped out to a 13-3 lead, but the Cardinals battled back with kills from Hannah Duchene and Kayla Peters leading to just a 14-8 deficit.  Madeline Vnuk recorded a kill as well, but Cornerstone took set two 25-11.

 

Set 3 – CUAA 25, Cornerstone 22

Hannah Duchene had Concordia's first kill in set 3.  The set was close early with Madeline Vnuk and Madalyn Lisman combining for a block and a 13-12 lead.  Kayla Peters hammered 3 straight kills later in the set, and 2 combined blocks from Jessalyn Peavyhouse and Madeline Vnuk put CUAA up 22-19.  After Cornerstone tied the match 22-22, the Cardinals scored 3 straight points with Madalyn Lisman making the winning block.

 

Set 4 – Cornerstone 25, CUAA 18

Hannah Duchene started set 4 with a kill.  Kayla Peters and Madeline Vnuk notched aces and Madalyn Lisman teamed up with Duchene for a block.  Claudia Grepke recorded 2 more kills later in the set, but Cornerstone was able to close out the game in set 4.

 

 

Concordia will head on the road tomorrow to face Aquinas at 1pm.
