SEASON PREVIEW: WOMEN’S HOCKEY AIMS TO SET NEW RECORDS

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's hockey has been preparing to hit the ice for their 2023-24 campaign. The Cardinals will aim to build on a school-best 8-14 record last year, more than doubling the program record for wins in a season. Head coach Maria Barlow enters her 6th year at the helm, bringing back 15 returners and adding 10 newcomers.

 

2022-23 Season Review

Concordia went 8-14 last season. The Cardinals opened the year with a 4-2 win over Penn State. The team downed Rhode Island 8-1 and also picked up a 2-game sweep over Davenport. Early in the season, CUAA took #10 University of Michigan to overtime at home before falling 2-1.

 

2023-24 Schedule Outlook

Concordia starts the new year on September 22 at UM-Dearborn for a 3 p.m. tilt. A week later, the Cardinals host Michigan in the Arctic Edge for their home opener at 8:30 pm.

In October, the team travels to Michigan and then takes a 2-game road trip to Minnesota. The Cardinals will play a 3-game series versus Michigan State from October 27-29 with the first game at home and the last two away.

In November, Concordia travels to Penn State for two games and then plays a home-and-home with Davenport before the Thanksgiving break. From December 1-2, the team faces Indiana Tech in a 2-game series and then rests up until the new year.

In January, the Cardinals play a home-and-home with Grand Valley State before hosting Lake Superior State for 2 games. A series against UM-Dearborn rounds out the month.

In February, Concordia faces Aquinas for a 2-game series. The Cardinals end the year on the road with 2 games at Massachusetts and a contest at Rhode Island.

 

Concordia Personnel

Seniors: Emily Greer returns after notching a goal and an assist with solid play on defense.

Juniors: Grace Dodgson returns after a team-high 14 goals and 15 assists last season. Makayla Steinmetz also paced the offense with 13 goals and 7 assists. Emma Shore had 9 goals along with 11 assists. Goalie Molly Burks picked up a win in net last year. Nicole Koops recorded two assists and Sydney Orkisz picked up one assist on defense. Lauren Fowler provides depth in goal.

Sophomores: Mallory Collins scored 5 goals with 8 assists last year. Julie McLaughlin notched 4 goals with an assist. Dakota Harmon recorded 3 goals and 6 assists last year. Skylar Croft had 3 goals and 4 assists. Defensemen Jenna Peet and Sara Kaczmarek each recorded a goal and 7 assists on defense. Melanie Foucha scored a goal and had an assist.

Newcomers: The Cardinals have 10 newcomers this year: senior Lauren Benoit, and freshmen Alison Garrett, Brooklyn Watkins, Eva Kingston, Hope Taucher, Kristen Keim, Larissa Radziszewski, Rose Lennon, Sienna Basile, and Tiffany Jentz.

Head coach Maria Barlow is joined by assistant coach Rachel Grefke and student manager Maggie Coggin.
