(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia men's basketball hosted #7 Lourdes on Wednesday night in WHAC play. The Cardinals pushed the Gray Wolves to the limit, holding multiple leads throughout the game, but the team eventually fell 68-61.
Zavion McClendon led the team with 22 points. Dylan Jergens was second with 12 points. Devyn Jones had a team-high 8 rebounds.
Devyn Jones opened scoring with a jumper. Dylan Jergens drove for a pair of layups for an early 6-2 lead. After falling behind 11-7, baskets from Devyn Jones and Joey Garwood tied the contest. Mark DeVries converted inside as the Cardinals kept pace. CUAA trailed 18-13 at the midway point.
Dylan Jergens started a go-ahead 9-2 run with a layup. Joey Garwood drove for a basket and Matt Kohler tied the game with a triple. Zavion McClendon hit the go-ahead jumper with 4:49 to play. Lourdes surged back into the lead with a late Joey Garwood layup making the score 30-24 at halftime.
Devyn Jones started a 12-0 run with a layup in the second half. Joey Garwood nailed a 3-pointer and Zavion McClendon drove to the hoop and hit the go-ahead triple. McClendon added a pair of baskets down the stretch as the game would be tied 38-38 at the midway point.
Jason Jergens hit a jumpshot to put the team ahead, but Lourdes responded with a 14-0 run to build a double digit lead. Devyn Jones ended the run with a layup and Dylan Jergens converted an "and-1" to battle back. Zavion McClendon continued his solid day with two free throws and Jergens added a triple.
Nate Brighton made free throws down the stretch to cut the deficit to 62-55 in the final minute. Zavion McClendon drained free throws an finished an "and-1" to pull the team within 6 points. After a turnover by Lourdes, a McCLendon free throw cut the deficit to just 66-61. However, Lourdes was able to hold on to take the hard-fought 68-61 win.
Concordia will travel to Cornerstone this Saturday at 3pm.
