Winter Champions of Character and Scholar-Athletes Announced

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Over the past couple of weeks the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), Mid-States Football Association (MSFA), and the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) have announced the Champions of Character awardees for each Winter 2023-24 sport as well as the Scholar-Athletes. 

 

Throughout the nine winter sports, the Cardinals would see 81 athletes being named to the WHAC (50) or MSFA (31) Scholar-Athlete teams, with 23 being named to the NCCAA Scholar-Athlete team.

 

The WHAC Scholar-Athlete team's qualifications were a junior in academic standing and a cumulative GPA of 3.25.

 

The MSFA Scholar Team included student-athletes who maintained a 3.25 GPA and were a sophomore in academic standing or higher. 

 

The NCCAA qualifications for Scholar athletes were for a junior or above in academic standing while maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.40. 

 

The Champions of Character were chosen for their commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

 


MEN'S BASKETBALL

Six different Cardinals were a part of the WHAC All-Academic team with Nate Brighton, Mason Canfield, Jason Jergens, Devyn Jones, Matt Kohler, and Jack MacLeod all being honored. 

 

The seven Cardinals who hit the NCCAA marks were Nate Brighton, Mason Canfield, Dylan Jergens, Jason Jergens, Matt Kohler, Evan Neff, and Devyn Jones. 

 

The team WHAC Champion of Character was Matt Kohler.  

 


WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Seven members of the women's team qualified for the WHAC All-Academic team as Angelina Haisha, Julia Hirt, Ellie Kallner, Taylor Leatherman, McKenzie Maciejewski, Grace Sandlin, and Izzy Viau were named to the team. 

 

Angelina Haisha, Julia Hirt, Ellie Kallner, Taylor Leatherman, Abby Long, McKenzie Maciejewski, and Grace Sandlin were named NCCAA Scholar Athletes. 

 

The WHAC Champion of Character for the team was Izzy Viau. 

 


MEN'S ICE HOCKEY

Griffin Briquet, Jackson Blough, Carson Ediger, Derek Hebner, Brandon Kucera, Anthony Seykora, and Brayden Tayles hit the qualifications for the All-Academic team. 

 

The team's nominee for Champions of Character was Brayden Tayles. 

 


MEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

The men's team would see Luke Bentz, Theodore Eising, Noah Finley, Maurice Kado, Avery Sanchez, Scott Smith, Noah Starkey, and Jared Stiver all be named to the WHAC All-Academic team. 

 

Luke Bentz, Theodore Eising, Noah Finley, Maurice Kado, Avery Sanchez, Scott Smith, and Noah Starkey were all honored on the NCCAA Scholar team as well. 

 

The WHAC Champion of the character for the team was Scott Smith. 

 


WOMEN'S INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD

Four women were named to the conference's All-Academic team with Madelyn Ankoviak, Lena Korte, Hailey Stasiukinas, and Quinn Stefanski being honored. 

 

Two Cardinals were honored on the NCCAA Scholar Team with Lena Korte and Hailey Stasiukinas being honored. 

 

The team's Champions of Character was Quinn Stefanski. 

 


MEN'S BOWLING

Two members from the men's team were named to the All-Academic team as Jeffrey Lizewski and Patrick Good Jr. were both honored.

 

The team's Champions of Character selection was Conner Rogus. 

 


WOMEN'S BOWLING

Named to the All-Academic team were Amanda Fisher, Emilee Hughes, Ariella Oakley, and Gabriella VanHorn. 

 

Amanda Fisher was the team's Champion of Character. 

 


COMPETITIVE CHEER

Eight Cardinals were a part of the conference's All-Academic team with Treneice Coleman-Kelley, Alexia Glaze, Celina Hinojosa, Bianca Hrynciw, Ella Kritzman, Jesus (Paulo) Pulido, Breanna Ray, and Marissa Sullivan.

 

The team's Champions of Character was Jesus (Paulo) Paulido.

 


COMPETITIVE DANCE

Lindsey Koshowsky, Alyssa Kraemer, Lydia Thurm, and Faith Watkins were the four Cardinals named to the WHAC All-Academic team. 

 

The team's Champions of Character was Lydia Thurm. 

 


FOOTBALL

31 different players were named to the MSFA team were Bailey Brooks, Gavin Brooks, James Carpenter, Harmon DeVries, Elijah Douglass, Gabe Dowling, Will Dowling, Parker Engel, Heather Flower, Jett Gott, Mason Gullen, Darien Gumm, Logan Hay, Maurice Kado, Liam Karry, Colby Kohmescher, Matthew Lyons, Kelly Matthews, Chase Maynard, Richard Miller, Logan Nahrwold-Settle, Tristen Needham, Evan Pittenger, Tristan Pranger, Zaire Prileau, Casey Rauch, Ryan Robinson, Andrew Van Dyke, Jadan Vizina, Ty Wagner, and Andrew Weimer.
