(Williamsburg, KY) – Concordia men's lacrosse traveled to Kentucky on Friday afternoon, facing off against Montreat College. The Cardinals came in 1-1 overall while Montreat came in 0-4. CUAA picked up their second straight win by grinding out a 13-10 victory.
Blake Blaisdell (JR/Romeo, MI) led Concordia with 4 goals in the game. Devin Wolever (JR/Battle Creek, MI) and Oliver Niedzwiecki (SR/Toledo, OH) recorded 3 goals apiece. Reggie Thompson (SR/Chicago, IL) had a team-high 5 ground balls. Joseph Loria (FR/Fenton, MI) recorded 9 saves in the win.
Devin Wolever opened scoring with a goal just over 2 minutes into the game off an assist from Blake Blaisdell. Montreat battled back to take a 2-1 lead, but a goal by Anthony Tucker (SR/Canton, MI) with 10 seconds remaining in the 1st tied the game 2-2.
The 2nd quarter saw 7 combined goals with Montreat scoring first to take a 3-2 lead. Blake Blaisdell scored at the 11:45 mark to knot the game 3-3, and Oliver Niedzwiecki's marker about 2 minutes later put the Cardinals back on top. Montreat reclaimed a 5-4 lead, but Oliver Niedzwiecki and Ryan Iles (SO/Royal Oak, MI) found the back of the net to give Concordia a 6-5 lead at halftime.
The lead continued to change hands as Montreat scored 2 goals in the 3rd to take a 7-6 lead. However, the Cardinals stormed back as Devin Wolever notched 2 straight goals to complete his hat trick. Miles Riddell (JR/Romeo, MI) and Blake Blaisdell completed a 4-0 run with markers late in the quarter, giving CUAA a 10-7 lead heading to the 4th.
Blaisdell finished his hat trick with a goal at the 13:21 mark of the 4th quarter and added his fourth tally of the game about 4 minutes later. Oliver Niedzwiecki completed his hat trick as well as the Cardinals continued to finish strong. Joseph Loria remained solid in goal and Concordia secured the 13-10 victory.
The Cardinals improve to 2-1 on the young season with the win. The team will play again tomorrow (Saturday, March 7) at University of the Cumberlands. Game time is set for 3:00pm.
