Women's ice hockey downed by UM-Dearborn in home opener

(Ann Arbor, MI) – Concordia women's hockey held their 2019 home opener when they hosted UM-Dearborn at the Arctic Coliseum on Friday night. The Cardinals looked to get off to a good start as they played before their home fans on homecoming weekend. UM-Dearborn proved to be a worthy opponent, pulling away early to claim a 12-0 win.

Teagen Johnson (FR/Arden Hills, MN) started in goal for Concordia, racking up 60 total saves in the contest. Adrianna Rugiero (FR/Dearborn Heights, MI) won the opening faceoff for the Cardinals, picking up the first of her 26 faceoff wins in the match. Rugiero won several more draws in the first minute, but UM-Dearborn scored the first goal of the game at the 1:03 mark.

The Wolverines added another goal just under 2 minutes into the game. Adrianna Rugiero recorded the Cardinals' first shot on goal and Kassidy Scheben (FR/Union, KY) fired a shot just wide. Maggie Coggin (FR/Lansing, MI) and Olivia Drys (SO/New Boston, MI) helped out defensively with several blocked shots, but UM-Dearborn continued to find the back of the net and led 8-0 after the 1st.

Isabel Hootselle (FR/Stafford, VA) won the opening faceoff in the 2nd period, picking up one of her 8 faceoff wins. CUAA killed off a penalty midway through the period, and Teagen Johnson remained sharp in net making 19 more saves. The game remained 8-0 after a scoreless 2nd period.

Olivia Drys and Breanna Sheridan (SO/Romeo, MI) took shots on goal for Concordia early in the 3rd period. The Cardinals had 2 power play opportunities in the 3rd, but the UM-Dearborn defense held strong. The Wolverines added 4 more goals and Concordia fell by a final score of 12-0.

The Cardinals will play their next game on Friday, October 11 when they travel to Aquinas. Puck drop is set for 9pm.
