(Dearborn, MI) - #5 seed Concordia men's hockey faced off against #4 seed Aquinas in the WHAC tournament on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals used a 3-goal third period to surge ahead of Aquinas and claimed the 4-1 win. The win will send Concordia to their third WHAC semifinal in as many years.
Zachary Janis played a complete game in goal, making 31 saves. The first period featured no scoring by either team with Concordia outshooting Aquinas 12-8. The Cardinals killed one penalty and had two power-play opportunities.
In the second period, Kyle Hebner scored in the first minute with Quinn Bieniek drawing the assist. Aquinas answered just 19 seconds later to tie the game 1-1. The game remained tied after two periods.
In the third period, Zane Rydel scored a power-play goal in the slot with Tyler Bieniek assisting. Sam Sahr added a goal on a rebound with helpers by Brandon Troyer and Zachary Janis. With Aquinas pulling their goalie in the final minutes, Tyler Bieniek tacked on an empty-net marker to ice the game. Concordia emerged victorious 4-1 as time expired.
Concordia will play top-seeded Indiana Tech tomorrow at 3pm in the semifinal.
