Women's basketball drops exhibition contest to NCAA D1 Oakland University

(Rochester Hills, MI) – Concordia women's basketball played an exhibition game against NCAA Division I Oakland University on Monday evening. The Cardinals entered 3-2 overall while the Golden Grizzlies came in 0-1. CUAA hung tough with Oakland throughout the 1st quarter, but the Golden Grizzlies eventually pulled away for a 76-42 win.

Tris'styn Williams (JR/New Baltimore, MI) led Concordia with 8 points and 12 rebounds in the game. Madison Birchmeier (FR/Corunna, MI) finished second with 7 points. Aly Lenz (SO/Fenton, MI) and Katie Snow (JR/Grosse Pointe Woods, MI) were tied with 5 points apiece.

Tris'styn Williams won the opening tip-off for the Cardinals. J'May Simmons made an early block and a jumper from Tris'styn Williams tied the game 2-2. CUAA took a 5-4 lead when Madison Birchmeier drilled a 3-pointer off an assist from Samantha Dorn (FR/Brownstown, MI). The Cardinals continued to hang tough when Aly Lenz converted an old-fashioned three-point play for an 8-7 lead.

Tris'styn Williams made a block on defense and a jumper from J'May Simmons tied the game 10-10. Madison Birchmeier used a spin move in the paint to put the Cardinals ahead by 2 points. The Golden Grizzlies closed the quarter on a 7-0 run and led 17-12 after the 1st.

Oakland extended their streak with a 9-0 run to begin the 2nd quarter. Shelbea James (SR/Dexter, MI) banked in a basket to end the run and J'May Simmons made a powerful block. Samantha Dorn drilled a 3-pointer down the stretch, and Tris'styn Williams added a jumper and a pair of free throws. Rebecca Laberge (SR/Quebec City, QC) made an old-fashioned three-point play with 13 seconds remaining, but the Cardinals trailed 42-24 at halftime.

Katie Snow started the 3rd quarter off with a layup for the Cardinals. Lindsey Ferrington (FR/Flint, MI) made a block and Madison Birchmeier made a putback after an offensive rebound. Tris'styn Williams knocked down a running layup and Aly Lenz closed the quarter with a pair of free throws. Oakland led 59-33 after the 3rd.

Katie Snow had Concordia's first basket in the 4th with a 3-pointer. Rachel Perry (SR/Otsego, MI) made a jumper with 3 minutes remaining off an assist from Rebecca Laberge. Stephanie Abraham (SO/Marine City, MI) had a layup late in the game and Lindsey Ferrington drained a pair of free throws in the final minute. Oakland claimed the win with a final score of 76-42.

Concordia will return to game action on Saturday, November 16 when they host rival Siena Heights in WHAC conference play. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm.
