No. 9 Concordia drops weekend series in tight games to No. 8 Aquinas

Concordia women's hockey continued their season with a weekend series against Aquinas.  The Cardinals hosted the Saints on Friday night at the Arctic Coliseum and headed on the road for Saturday evening's contest.  CUAA fell 1-0 in an exciting overtime contest in game 1 and dropped the road match 3-0.

 

Game 1 – AQ 1, CUAA 0 (OT)

Lizzy Knappenberger recorded 45 saves in goal for the Cardinals.  Emily Greer took the first shot on goal as the Cardinals were on the attack early on.  CUAA killed off a penalty early in the period and Reagan Tolley rang a shot off the post.  The game remained 0-0 after the first period.

Aaliyah James won the opening faceoff in the second period and fired two quick shots in the first few minutes.  The Cardinals killed off a 5-on-3 powerplay and received their own chance with the man advantage, but the game stayed scoreless after the second period.

Aaliyah James continued her success in the faceoff circle, winning the third-period opening faceoff.  Both teams traded powerplay chances and rushes into the opposing end, but the game headed to overtime tied 0-0.

The Cardinals killed off a lingering penalty in the first 31 seconds of overtime, but Aquinas was able to break through with a goal 58 seconds in to claim the hard-fought win.

 

Game 2 – AQ 3, CUAA 0

Lizzy Knappenberger made 61 saves in the contest on Saturday night.  Concordia killed off a penalty in the first period and the game remained tied 0-0.

Aquinas outshot Concordia 26-6 in the second period and broke through with 2 goals to take a 2-0 lead. The Saints continued a heavy attack and added a third goal in the 3rd period, claiming the win 3-0 to finish the series.

 

Concordia will play next on Saturday at 4pm when they face Aquinas.
