Cardinals unable to overcome slow start in 5-2 loss to Rochester

(Rochester, MI) – Concordia men's hockey completed their season-opening weekend series when they traveled to Rochester on Sunday night.  The Cardinals looked to sweep the series after defeating the Warriors 4-3 at home on Saturday.  CUAA nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit after the first period, but Rochester came away with the win 5-2.

 

Stephen Ward-Brown started in goal for Concordia, making 26 saves.  Quinn Bieniek took for the first shot on goal for the Cardinals in the game.  CUAA received an early power play chance, but Rochester recorded a shorthanded goal and added two more markers in the period.  Concordia trailed 3-0 after the first.

 

Both teams received power play opportunities in the second with Stephen Ward-Brown making a critical save on a shorthanded breakaway.  The Cardinals broke the shutout with 8:07 remaining when Tristian Waechter scored a one-timer while sliding on the ice with the assist to Jack Geraghty.  CUAA trailed 3-1 after the second.

 

Stephen-Ward Brown continued to make saves for the Cardinals to keep the game within reach.  Concordia pulled within a goal when Abel Christians streaked in from the left wing and scored off assists from Jack Geraghty and Thomas Hendry.  However, Rochester was able to answer with 2 more goals late in the period and the Cardinals fell 5-2.

 

Concordia will play their next game on Friday, February 10th when they travel to the west side of the state to play Calvin College.  Puck drop is set for 8:30pm.
