Men's ice hockey defeats Cleary 4-1 to sweep weekend series

(Hartland, Mich.) – After defeating Cleary at the Arctic Coliseum late Friday night in a convincing 7-3 victory, the Cardinals and Cougars squared off again on Saturday. The puck dropped at Hartland Sports Center which serves as Cleary's home ice. The Cardinals put forth another strong effort to complete the weekend sweep by defeating the Cougars, 4-1. The Cardinals improved their overall record to 5-4 and 3-3 in the WHAC.

 

The Bieniek brothers contributed on three of the four goals for the Cardinals. Quinn scored the Cardinals third goal and also tacked on two assists for the day. Tyler also assisted on two of the Cardinals goals.

 

Cleary found the back of the next first to take an early 1-0 on a short-handed goal. Abel Christians provided the equalizer with a power play goal four minutes left in the first period. The Bieniek's both assisted on the goal.

 

The Cardinals offensive took over in the second period scoring three unanswered goal. All three goals were power play goals as well. Hunter Kepple netted the first goal 8 minutes into the period on an assist from Brendan Troyer. Quinn scored the Cardinals third goal on an assist from Tyler 14:52 in the second. Brendan Troyer scored the Cardinals final goal on an assist from Tyler Groth and Quinn Bieniek.

 

Despite 26 shots from the Cardinals, the third period was scoreless and the Cardinals defense held strong for a 4-1 victory. Elijah Gibbons was solid for the Cardinals between the pipes recording 24 saves in the win.

 

The Cardinals will continue WHAC play next weekend in a two-game series with Lawrence Tech University. The first game will take place on Saturday, March 5th at Farmington Hills Ice Arena. The Cardinals will host the Blue Devils on Saturday, March 6th at the Arctic Coliseum. Both games are set to start at 2:30pm.
