Men's Track & Field see's success at Polar Bear Invite

(Marian, IN) - The Men's Track and Field team opened their season early at the Polar Bear Invite hosted by Indiana Wesleyan on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23. The team battled some rough spring weather to come away with 2 NCCAA qualifiers and 2 personal records.

The throwers were able to come through despite the conditions. Both Scott Smith (junior; Saginaw, MI) and Jesse Lietzow (Freshman; St.Clair Shores, MI) both earned NCCAA qualification marks. Smith earned a spot in Javelin with a throw of 49.68 meters, which also gave him a new personal record and a third-place overall finish. Leitzow earned his qualifying spot in the shot put with a throw of 13.27 meters.

Avery Sanchez (Senior; Allen Park, MI) is the other Cardinal who earned a personal record, with the best time in the 5k of 18:09.

There were three Cardinals that made their career outdoor debut in an event. Dylan Anderson (Freshman; Ottawa Lake, MI) debuted in the 400 and finished in 55.72 seconds. Dominic Catallo (Freshman; Westland, MI) and Dylan Ladmirault (Sophomore; Port Huron, MI) made their debut in the 800. Catallo finished in a time of 2:12 and Ladmirault finished in a time of 2:34. Lietzow and Gerrard Noel (Freshman; Canton, MI) made their debut in hammer throw and discus. Leitzow threw 33.53 meters in hammer and 22.89 meters in discus. Noel had a throw of 26.16 meters in discus and a throw of 28.49 meters.

The team will take some time off to celebrate Easter and will pick their season back up at the Bill Bippes Invite at Spring Arbor on Saturday, April 6.
