Volleyball drops WHAC opener at Lourdes

(Sylvania, OH) The Concordia Women's Volleyball team returned to the court for the first time in over a week to open conference play at Lourdes University. The Gray Wolves hosted the Cardinals on Wednesday night and were able to take down Concordia 3-0 in the WHAC opener for both sides.

Breanne June led the Cardinal attack with 12 kills while also leading the team with 15 digs. Kayla Peters tacked on 5 kills, and a team leading 2 aces and 4 black assists. Abigail Austin accumulated 18 assists through the 3 sets.

 

Set 1 - Concordia 16 - Lourdes 25

The first set was tightly contested through the first half as it was tied a lot of the way up until 11-11. At that point, Lourdes went on a 5-1 run to get a lead over the Cardinals. The Gray Wolves won the final five points of the set to win by a margin of 9. Concordia's 9 attacking errors and Lourdes' .257 hitting percentage proved to be the difference in the first.

 

Set 2 - Concordia 18 - Lourdes 25

Lourdes jumped to an early lead in the second, and was able to maintain it for the entire set. Breanne June tallied five kills in the set, but Lourdes' attack outpaced the Cardinals to go up 2-0.

 

Set 3 - Concordia 21 - Lourdes 25

Kills from June, Jessalyn Peavyhouse, and Kayla Peters put the Cardinals up 3-1 from the jump. After holding the advantage for a good portion of the third, the Gray Wolves scored four straight to reclaim the lead. Both sides shared the lead off and on before a five point run from the Gray Wolves to go up by the same amount. Lourdes closed out the game to sweep the Cards, 3-0.

 

 

The Cardinals will be back this weekend with a tournament at Indiana Tech against Indiana Southeast, St. Ambrose, Goshen and St. Francis. The games will be on Friday and Saturday in Fort Wayne.
