Women's Lacrosse downs Aquinas on the road, 16-11

(Grand Rapids, MI) - Concordia women's lacrosse traveled to Aquinas on Wednesday afternoon to continue WHAC play. The Cardinals outlasted the Saints and pulled away in the second half for a 16-11 victory.

 

Michaela Ullery played the full game in net with 4 saves and tied McKenna VanZant with 7 ground balls. Alana Mortimer led the team with 7 draw controls and 5 caused turnovers.

In the 1st quarter, Aquinas struck first but Isabella Komarowski countered with a free position goal. The Saints added two goals and again the Cardinals responded with markers by Madeline Turcotte and Madisyn Fox. Fox went on to complete a hat trick and Cecelia Gibson converted with 18 seconds left. CUAA led 6-4 after the first quarter.

Madeline Turcotte recorded her second goal to start the second quarter. Brynn O'Neil found the back of the net with an assist from Turcotte. CUAA outshot Aquinas 11-3 in the frame and held an 8-5 lead at halftime.

 

Aquinas scored three straight goals to tie the game 8-8 in the third quarter. Cecelia Gibson ended the run with her second goal of the game. Madeline Turcotte finished off her hat trick and added a fourth goal on the power play. Madisyn Fox scored on a free position shot to give CUAA a 12-8 lead after the third quarter.

Savanna Schmidt continued the run with a goal early in the fourth quarter. Cecelia Gibson completed her hat trick and Madisyn Fox notched her team-leading fifth goal on a free position shot. McKenna VanZant added an unassisted goal. The Cardinal defense weathered a late Aquinas run and secured a 16-11 victory.

 

Concordia will return home this Saturday April 6th to host rival Madonna at 12pm as the Cardinals will also celebrate Senior Day.
