Women's Lacrosse comes up short in overtime against Bethel in WHAC First Round

(Ann Arbor, MI) Concordia Women's Lacrosse earned the fourth seed in the WHAC Tournament, and as a result hosted fifth seeded Bethel on Tuesday afternoon. Their meeting during the regular season was a 9-7 win for the Cardinals, and the rematch in the playoffs was similarly closely contested. In an overtime thriller, the Cardinals fell just short of the Pilots, 11-10.

Madeline Turcotte led the Cardinal attackers with 5 goals, while McKenna VanZant and Isabella Komarowski scored a pair each. Defensively, Michaela Ullery saved 9 shots in goal and Alana Mortimer caused 7 turnovers and picked up 9 ground balls.

The Cardinals scored the first three goals of the game, with freshmen Cecelia Gibson, Madeline Turcotte, and McKenna VanZant all finding the back of the net within the first five minutes. The teams then started trading goals, beginning with both teams taking advantage of a player up opportunity. VanZant scored her second and Isabella Komarowski netted her first to make it 5-3 after the first.

The Pilots took the lead in the second quarter with four goals coming in the first nine minutes, including a player up and player down goal. Madeline Turcotte completed her hat trick with a pair of goals to claw the Cardinals back into the game at the end of the half. Concordia went into the locker room down a goal.

Neither team scored within the first five minutes of the second half until Madeline Turcotte scored while the Cardinals were down a player. Towards the end of the third, both teams had several cards awarded to them, but it was Bethel who took advantage, taking the lead with a player up goal.

Bethel scored early in the final quarter to make it a two-goal advantage, which they preserved for 10 minutes. With just over two minutes remaining that Isabella Komarowski buried a pass from Tara Drinane to make it a one goal game. Madeline Turcotte then scored on the next possession to tie the game up and send it into overtime.

In overtime both sides had looks at goal, but it wasn't until the second half of the first overtime that Bethel was able to score and ultimately win the game 11-10.
