Madonna's second half surge takes down Women's Soccer

(Ann Arbor, MI) The Concordia Women's Soccer team hosted the Madonna Crusaders Wednesday afternoon. The Cardinals kept things even through the first half, but Madonna was able to net three second half goals for the difference in the game.

Madonna's Abby Werthman was able to get a couple looks on goal in the first half, but Hayley Jacobson was able to prevent anything early. Werthman's best opportunity was one that she struck from just inside the box, but went off the far post to Jacobson.

With about 16 minutes left in the first half, Megan Starkey made a run past the Crusader defense and put a shot on target that was kept out with the feet of the Madonna keeper.

The Cardinals won a pair of corner kicks late in the first half which were taken by Isabel Stropich, but the Madonna defense held firm, making it a scoreless draw going into the half.

Just 35 seconds into the second half, Holly McManus was able to draw a penalty inside the box for a penalty kick. McManus took the PK herself, and was able to give Madonna the one goal advantage.

With under 24 minutes left in the game Abby Werthman was able to weave her way past the Cardinal defense and Jacobson to bury one in the net for a two-goal lead. Werthman tacked on another goal when she was on the receiving end of an Olivia Brannon pass to make it 3-0 Crusaders.

Next up for the Cardinals will be a road game at UM-Dearborn this Saturday.
