SEASON PREVIEW: Cardinals ready for 2024 season with opening game against Rochester Christian

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals Women's Soccer team will take the field for the first time in 2024, today when they face off against the Rochester Christian Warriors. The Cardinals are coming off a season where they went 1-14-2 overall and 1-7-2 in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) play. They are headed by Head Coach Kaela Beerman, who is in her first season.

2023 SEASON REVIEW

After starting the season 0-8, the Cardinals would pick up a draw against Indiana Tech at home and then travel to earn a 3-0 win against Cleary. The Cardinals would fight on to another 0-0 tie against Lourdes before rounding out their season at home against Cornerstone for a 3-0 win on senior day. The Cardinals earned four shutouts throughout the season. 

 


2024 SCHEDULE OUTLOOK

The Cardinals will only play in WHAC games for this 2024 season as they start out with Rochester Christian. That game will be followed by a pair of home games against Cornerstone and Michigan-Dearborn. Two more games will round out the September schedule as they will be on the road against Lawrence Tech and #RV Northwestern Ohio. 

 

The month of October will feature the final seven games of the regular season for CUAA as they start out the month with a home match against #RV Siena Heights, travel to Madonna, and return home against Defiance. The Cardinals will have a week off before a three-game road trip against Lourdes, Indiana Tech and #5 Aquinas. The final game of the regular season will see the Cardinals take on the Cleary Cougars on October 25th.

 


CONCORDIA PERSONNEL

The Cardinals feature 8 returning players including two goalkeepers. Hayley Jacobson has totaled 140+ saves each of the past two seasons, reaching 160 least year, while Alexandra Salazar will return for her second season with the Cards after playing in a pair of matches in 2023. Katelyn Aiello led the returners with 3 points last season. Isabella Elsey played in all 18 matches last year with Alexis Russell playing in 16 herself. Taia Vega, Ambryn Diener, and Emily Kennedy all saw action last season as well. 

 

Coach Beerman has brought on a host of newcomers to the squad this year including Madelyn Ankoviak, Samantha Kohls, Nicole Koops, Hannah McCarthy, Isabella Perez, Madison Poe, Lauryn Rhodea, Mara Stroch, and Jayde Ullenbruch.

2024 WHAC PRESEASON POLL

Aquinas took home the top spot in the preseason poll with 166 points and 10 of the 13 first-place votes. 15 points back was Northwestern Ohio (1 first-place vote) followed by Siena Heights with 149 points (2 first-place votes). The rest of the top five was Lawrence Tech with 129 points and Madonna with 112 points. 

 

The Cardinals earned 28 points and were voted 12th in the WHAC. 

 


As announced on June 13th by CUWAA President Erik Ankerberg, the 2024-25 Academic Year will serve as the final season for CUAA Athletics.
