Year in review: Top Cardinal headlines of 2020

One could say 2020 was "for the record books". Despite the many challenges and uncertainty, we take time to celebrate the successes of 2020. Our Cardinal community embraced the challenges, persevered, and remained defiant. Many Cardinals celebrated sucess both on and off the court through championships, academic achievements, community iniatives, and spiritual development. January

  • Inaugural MLK Day Classic featuring featuring four high school boys basketball teams. Concordia Lutheran High School (Fort Wayne, Ind.), Father Gabriel Richard (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Valley Lutheran (Saginaw, Mich.), Lutheran North (Macomb, Mich.) (Release)
  • Leadership Summit – Student-athletes participated in a leadership summit where industry leaders from the community and alumni shared their experiences and journey. Rob Miller, Commissioner of the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference gave the keynote address. (Release)
  • Competitive Cheer wins their third consecutive CIT Championship. (Release)
  • Liz Larsen (Women's Track) qualifies for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championship with a NAIA B standard qualifying time in the 3000m Race Walk. (Release)

  • Men's hockey earns their first WHAC win in program history with a shootout goal by Mason Trowbridge. (Release)  

February

  • Megan Ennis qualifies for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championship with a NAIA B standard qualifying time in the 600m. Ennis broke her own school and personal record. (Release)
  • Trys'styn Williams named the women's basketball WHAC Player of the Week on after averaging 21.5 points and 6 rebounds in two wins. (Release)
  • Paige Johnson (Women's basketball) selected for Red Cross Collegiate Leadership Program. (Release)
  • 4x400 relay team featuring Megan Ennis, Rebecca Laberge, Alex Homann, and Mae'isha Dulin sets school record of 4:12.80. 
  • Competitive Cheer wins WHAC Championship. Coach Edge named WHAC Coach of the Year and Morgan Raby named WHAC Player of the Year. (Release)

  • Korey Reichard named men's bowling WHAC Freshman of the Year. (Release)
  • Mariana Miller and Jennifer Miller sweep women's lacrosse WHAC Player of the Week honors. (Release)
  • Victor Diaz named baseball's NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week. (Release)
  • Concordia awarded bid to host 2021 NAIA Women's Golf National Championship. (Release)
  • Jerald Booker named men's basketball WHAC second team all-conference. (Release)
  • Katie Snow named to women's basketball WHAC first team and all-defense team. (Release)

March

  • Competitive Cheer secures at-large bid to the 2020 NAIA Competitive Cheer National Championship. (Release)
  • Joe Loria (Men's lacrosse) named WHAC Defensive Player of the Week after recording 13 saves in the teams 13-2 win over Clarke University. (Release)
  • Fred Watts named NAIA Competitive Cheer All-American. (Release)

  • Megan Ennis earns NAIA All-America honors taking 7th place in the 600m with a school record time of 1:35.28. (Release)
  • Victor Diaz named baseball's WHAC Player of the Week after averaging .471 for the week and totaling 8 hits, 3 stolen bases, and 10 RBI. (Release)
  • Lauren Reichel named softball's NCCAA Student-Athlete of the Week. (Release)
  • WHAC cancels remainder of spring athletics season. (Release)

April

  • Several Cardinals recognized in NCCAA #KingChasing series. (Release)
  • Esports continues weekly competition with Fortnite, Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, and NBA 2K along with other titles. (Release)
  • Cardinals celebrate Student Worker Appreciation Week. (Release)
  • Academic classes move to virtual format due to COVID-19. Student-athletes and teams remained engaged virtually through zoom workouts, team meetings, and chapel.

May

  • Softball named inaugural women's WHAC Champions of Character team. (Release)
  • Megan Laib named NCCAA Softball Game Plan 4 LIFE Character award recipient. (Release)

  • Grant Steinborn and Chris Lowe named to CoSIDA academic all-district team. (Release)
  • Billy Blair named NCCAA's Hank Burbridge Outstanding Leadership Award recipient. (Release)
  • 5th annual CARDYS celebrates 2019-20 achievements. (Release)
  • Concordia recognizes graduates with live degree conferral ceremony. (Release)

June

  • Peter Morrison named WHAC recipient of NAIA's A.O. Duer award. (Release)
  • Allison Unger named Head Cross Country Coach. (Release)

July

  • NAIA postpones fall 2020 championships to spring 2021. (Release)
  • Football recognized in pair of college football preseason polls and publication. Donovan Corlew named preseason all-american. Football ranked 34 consecutive weeks in NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll. (Release)

  • WHAC moves fall championships to the spring with ability for fall competition. (Release)
  • Women's ice hockey announces 2020 recruiting class. (Release)

August

  • Caleb O'Hara named Offensive Line Coach. (Release)
  • Nicholas Peters joins Cardinals as Assistant Athletic Trainer. (Release)
  • Jonathan Coddington promoted to Offensive Coordinator. (Release)

September

  • Women's golf is the first team to begins to compete at Lourdes Invitational since previous March. (Release)
  • Cardinals Corner begins seventh season on WTKA the Ticket hosted by Ira Weintraub. (Release)
  • Nick Althouse wins individual honors at CUAA Invite. (Release)
  • Women's tennis defeats Olivet 5-4 in season opener. (Release)
  • Concordia athletic department named a Five-Star Gold Champions of Character institution by NAIA. This was the first time in school history to receive gold status. (Release)

 

  • NAIA announces 2019-20 scholar athletes and teams; 54 Cardinals named scholar athletes. (Release)
  • Dominic Scala named Esports Director. (Release)

October

  • Concordia athletic department hosted the Cardinal Golf Classic at Washtenaw Golf Club. The event saw 146 golfers and over 60 individual or business supporters through donations/sponsorships that raised over $30,000. All funds raised went to support the student-athlete experience through scholarship assistance and facility development.
  • Samantha Golchuk honored by WHAC and NCCAA as women's soccer Offensive Player of the Week. (Release)
  • Ryan Webb named NCCAA men's soccer student-athlete of the week. (Release)

  • Gabriella Porter and Abbey Bentz sweep top spots at Cardinal "Old School" Cross Country Invite. (Release)
  • Ryan Webb named WHAC and NAIA Player of the Week. Only the second Cardinal in program history to receive NAIA honors. (Release

  • Kayla Peters named women's volleyball NCCAA student-athlete of the week. (Release)

November

  • Esports Program partners with Extra-Life to host 24 hour streaming charity event supporting Beaumont Children's Hospital. Over a dozen student-athletes participated to raise nearly $3,000. (Release)
  • Kate Snow named women's basketball WHAC Player of the Week.

  • 13 Cardinals named fall sports NCCAA scholar-athletes. (Release)
  • Women's basketball starts the season 3-1 and were honored in the first NAIA Coaches' Poll as receiving votes. (Release)
  • Concordia athletic department hosted nationally televised basketball game on ESPN between Ypsi Prep and Team Sizzle. The game featured several prominent high school and prep school players including Emoni Bates.

December

  • Elisabeth Komurka named Head Men's and Women's Golf Coach. (Release)
