Baseball cruises in sweep over Lourdes

(Sylvania, OH) – Concordia baseball continued their weekend with a WHAC doubleheader at Lourdes on Sunday afternoon.  The Cardinals featured a 31-13 overall record (13-3 overall) while the Gray Wolves came in 15-23 overall (5-11 WHAC).  CUAA extended their winning streak to 8 straight games with a sweep over Lourdes.

 

Game 1 – CUAA 10, LU 4

Grant Steinborn started on the mound, making 2 strikeouts in 8 innings.  Steinborn helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly in the 1st inning to score Adam PurdyCalvin Syrjala added an RBI double to drive in Dylan Steinke for a 2-0 lead.  The Cardinals turned double plays on defense to close out the 1st and 2nd innings.

Concordia added another run in the 4th inning.  RJ Bortle hit a lead-off double and slid into second base.  Adam Purdy then hit a double off the fence to allow Bortle to score.  The Cardinals tacked on 2 more runs in the 5th, starting with RJ Bortle hitting an RBI single to score Preston ShermanDylan Steinke eventually used a sacrifice fly to drive in pinch runner Johnny Shields for a 5-0 lead.

Lourdes broke the shutout in the 7th, but Concordia responded with 4 runs in the 8thCalvin Syrjala smashed a 3-run opposite-field home run, also scoring Victor Diaz and Dylan SteinkeChris Lowe scored later on a throwing error to cap off the inning.

Lourdes scored a run in the 8th, but the Cardinals got it back in the 9th when Dylan Steinke tripled and then scored on an RBI groundout from Victor DiazJack Vrba and Ryan Kotecki combined to limit the Gray Wolves to 2 runs in the bottom of the 9th to close out the game.

 

Game 2 – CUAA 7, LU 1

Tyson Kleinfelter pitched a complete game in the second matchup, notching 8 strikeouts.  The game remained scoreless until the 3rd when RJ Bortle hit an RBI single to drive in Vann AckerGrant Steinborn added a bases-loaded RBI groundout to make it a 2-0 CUAA lead.

Lourdes got on the scoreboard with a solo home run in the 4thGrant Steinborn countered in the 5th with an RBI single that scored Dylan Steinke.  The duo combined again in the 7th when Steinborn used a sacrifice fly to score Steinke.

The Cardinals extended their lead with a 3-run 7th inning.  Jarrett Batanian hit an RBI single to score Caleb Chamberlain.  Jimmy Wressel doubled to drive in Batanian and eventually scored on a throwing error after stealing third base.

Tyson Kleinfelter continued to perform well on the mound and the Cardinals turned a double play to close out both the 8th and 9th innings to complete the sweep.

 

Concordia will return to action on Saturday, May 1 with a doubleheader at Madonna.  First pitch is at 1pm. The Cardinals will host senior day on Sunday, May 2nd against Aquinas
