Softball drops doubleheader against Cornerstone

(Ann Arbor, MI) - CUAA softball hosted Cornerstone on Monday afternoon in a WHAC doubleheader.  The Cardinals fell 11-1 in game one and forced extra innings in game two but dropped the contest 11-6. 

 

GAME ONE: Cornerstone 11, CUAA 1 – five innings 

 

Paige Anderson started on the mound, recording three strikeouts in 4.2 innings Katie Tobias opened scoring in the third inning with an RBI double to drive in Megan Martin.   

 

Cornerstone took the lead with two runs in the fourth inning The Golden Eagles extended their lead with nine runs in the fifth inning Elyse Brittain secured the final out of the fifth inning, but the Cardinals were unable to make a comeback and fell 11-1 in game one. 

 

GAME TWO: Cornerstone 11, CUAA 6 – nine innings 

 

Hannah Duchene started game two on the mound, making two strikeouts in 2.1 innings Cornerstone scored one run in the both the first and second innings In the bottom of the second, Megan Martin drew a bases-loaded walk to force Summer Brady home Cornerstone added two more runs in the third inning Kendall Kahl came on to pitch, recording four strikeouts in 3.2 innings.   

 

Cornerstone added two runs in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Katie Tobias hit a 2-run homer to trim the deficit to 6-3 Faith Cramton continued the rally with a 3-run homer in the sixth inning to tie the game.   

 

Elyse Brittain came on to pitch in the seventh inning, recording four strikeouts in three innings In the top half, Katie Tobias made a key diving catch from the catcher position to record an out. In the bottom half, Emmi Liptow hit a deep double to get on base and Madalyne Wieneke drew a walk. However, Cornerstone turned a double play to close out the seventh and force extra innings  

 

Neither team scored until the ninth inning when Cornerstone took the lead with five runs. In the bottom half, Kaleigh McClelland led off with a deep double off the wall However, the Cardinals were unable to make a comeback and fell 11-6 in game two. 

 

 

CUAA will remain at home this Thursday, April 24th, to host University of Michigan-Dearborn for a doubleheader starting at 3:30pm.
