Men's Track & Field finish in 8th at WHAC Championships

(Adrian, MI) - The Men's Track and Field team finished the WHAC Championships at Siena Heights in 8th place with a total of 20 points.

The team was led by a 5th place finish in Javelin from Scott Smith (Sophomore; Saginaw, MI) with a distance of 46.91 meters. Michael Brannan (Senior; Dearborn Heights, MI) finished in 9th place with a season-best distance of 40.35 meters. Mason Wyllis (Sophomore; Holt, MI) finished up the event with a 13th place finish and a distance of 37.16.

Zachary Belinsky (Senior; Beulah, MI) earned the team another point in the only other throwing event contested. Belinsky earned an 8th place finish with a distance of 40.80 meters. Will Hall (Freshman; Indianapolis, IN) finished right behind in 9th place with a distance of 40.50 meters.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Avery Sanchez (Senior; Allen Park, MI), Luke Bentz (Sophomore; Fort Wayne, IN), Zak Schroeder (Freshman; Napoleon, OH) and Theodore Eising (Junior; Royal Oak, MI) ran less than a second off of the school record to earn a 7th place finish with a time of 8:20 and wrapped up scoring for the day.

The team also had a group of sprinters compete in 100-meter dash prelims. The group was led by senior Kash Warren (Lorain, OH) with a time of 11.04 seconds. He was followed by Maurice Kado (Sophomore; Beachwood, OH) in 11.37, Ethan Dodson (Freshman; Rochester Hills, MI) in 11.59 and Andrew Kozlowski in 12.87 seconds.

In day number two, the day was highlighted by both the 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams finishing in 4th place.

The relay team of Dodson, Kado, Warren and Noah Starkey (Junior; Macomb, MI) finish in a time of 42.87 seconds. While the relay team of Starkey, Schroeder, Dodson and Bentz broke the school record on their way to a 4th-place finish with a time of 3:28.69.

Warren also helped earn the team a point by finishing in 7th place in the 200-meter dash and rebreaking his school record with a time of 21.85 seconds. Starkey ran a new personal record to finish in 22.15 seconds for 13th place. Kado finished up the 200-meter group by finishing in 24.12 seconds.

The final point came from Belinsky who finished in 8th place in shot put. Belinsky threw a distance of 12.69 meters. While Smith finished right behind in 10th place with a throw of 12.30 meters.

In mid-distance and distance events for day number two, Sanchez started the day off. As he competed in the 3k steeplechase finishing in 10:53 and earning an 11th-place finish.

Eising earn a new personal record in the 1500, by finishing in a time of 4:17. The team had 4 runners compete in the 800 meters, with Bentz, Schroeder, Brannan and Jared Stiver competing. Bentz led the group by finishing in a new personal time of 1:59. While Schroeder and Stiver each also earned new personal records with finishing times of 2:03 and 2:25. Brannan continued to work back from a quad injury to run close to his season best, but finished in 2:16.

Freshman Adam Fisch (Caro, MI) returned to the 5k, to narrowly clip his previous best time. Fisch finished in a total time of 17:44.

 

WHAC HONORS

Noah Starkey was recognized as the team's WHAC Champion of Character. The junior was honored for his commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.

The WHAC announced their All-Academic teams, which involve being a junior in Academic standing and having a cumulative GPA of 3.25. Five Cardinals were named to the team which included Avery Sanchez, Joshua Wood, Noah Starkey, Theodore Eising, and Zachary Belinsky

 

UP NEXT

The team finished in 8th place with a total of 20 points, just 14 points behind both Lawrence Tech and Rochester, but 16 points ahead of Lourdes. Some of the team will be back in action at the National Christian College Athletic Association National Championship Meet hosted by Columbia International University in Columbia, South Carolina on May 10 – 12.
