Women's Basketball soars past Cornerstone

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia women's basketball went on the road to face Cornerstone on Tuesday evening.  The Cardinals came in 12-9 (9-4 WHAC) while the Golden Eagles came in 3-15 (1-9 WHAC).  CUAA continued their strong play in the WHAC with a 72-48 victory.

Julia Hirt led the team with 16 points.  Mackenzie Howe came in second with 10 points.  Alize Tripp finished third with 9 points and team-high 9 rebounds.

 

After Cornerstone scored the first 5 points, Julia Hirt began a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer and a quick layup after a steal.  Ellie Kallner finished the run with a jumper and a triple.  Keirslynn Lawless went to work in the paint with two layups and Samantha Dorn drilled a triple.  Two more inside baskets from Lawless put CUAA ahead 21-9 after the first quarter.

Asaria Turman scored to start the second quarter.  Taylor Leatherman drove for a layup and Mackenzie Howe scored in the paint.  Samantha Dorn drained two free throws and Asaria Turman powered her way inside to score.  Alize Tripp extended the lead with a free throw and a quick drive and Julia Hirt added a 3-pointer.  Two late free throws from Emily McCalla put CUAA up 41-17 at halftime.

 

Alize Tripp started the third quarter with a free throw.  Taylor Leatherman converted an "and-1" and Samantha Dorn added a quick drive.  Julia Hirt made her own old-fashioned three-point play and Zaria Mitchner made a free throw.  Alize Tripp and Mitchner added layups and Tripp added a step-back triple in the final seconds for a 58-32 lead.

Mackenzie Howe started the fourth quarter with two inside layups and two free throws.  Julia Hirt drained a 3-pointer and a layup as the Cardinals stayed in front.  Emily McCalla made a free throw and Ellie Kallner chipped in a late layup, giving CUAA a 72-48 win.

 

Concordia will return home this Friday, January 28 when they host Grace Christian at 7:00pm.
