WHAC Preview: Women's Basketball prepared to take on the Blue Devils in WHAC Quarterfinals

(Ann Arbor, MI) – The Concordia Cardinals women's basketball team clinched a home playoff berth in the 2021-22 Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament for the second straight season. They finished with the fourth-best record in the WHAC and will go up against the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University.

About the Blue Devils

The Blue Devils finished the season with an overall record of 15-15 and an 11-9 record in WHAC play. After a slow start to the season, LTU would pick it up after conference play started winning eight of their next eleven games. Coming out of the winter break, the Blue Devils would upset Indiana Tech and give the Warriors their sole WHAC loss on the season. 

 

Lawrence Tech is led by their senior point guard, Kendall Fisher, who has tallied over 1,600 points in her career, is scoring 16.6 points per game, while Julia Huey is second on the team averaging 10.1 points. 

 

In addition to leading the team in points, Fisher also is top on the team in assists with 5.8 a game. Kylee Batey is the top rebounder on the team averaging 7.6 rebounds, with Fisher second at 5.8. 

 

The Blue Devils are coached by Grace Howrigon who is in her 3rd season with LTU and has a career record of 45-47.

 

About the Cardinals

Concordia finished the season on a two-game winning streak, bringing their total record to 18-11 and 14-6 in WHAC play. The Cardinals saw a mid-season stretch where they won eight of nine games. 

 

Alize Tripp comes into the game leading the Cards in scoring at 13.7 points a game, followed by Taylor Leatherman and Samantha Dorn who average 8.8 and 8.1 points respectively. 

 

Leading the passing effort are Tripp and Leatherman who are totaling 3.0 and 2.1 assists per game. Leatherman also leads the rebounding effort with Keirslynn Lawless right behind her as they average 5.3 and 5.0 rebounds per game. 

 

Keifer Haffey leads the team out who is now in his fourth season and has a 62-57 career record. 

 

In Case You Missed It (Previous Matchups)

The Cardinals split the season series against the Blue Devils as they dropped the first match at LTU back on November 10, 67-53, and came out victorious at home 71-64 against Lawrence Tech. 

 

In the loss, Tripp led the Cardinals with 19 points and five rebounds, while Stephanie Abraham tallied 13 points and four rebounds. LTU was led by Fisher's 26 points and 21 rebounds from Batey. 

 

In the home win, Leatherman was the top scorer in the game with 16 points and eight rebounds as Dorn, Tripp Lawless, and Asaria Turman all scored in double figures for the game. Fisher and Batey led the LTU attack with 15 and 14 points respectively, while Batey added 11 rebounds as well.
