Women's Hockey wins close battle with Lake Superior State

(Sault Ste. Marie, MI) - Concordia Women's Hockey headed up north for the first of two games with Lake Superior State on Friday night. Despite falling behind on two seperate occasions in the first period, the Cardinals battled back and would secure a 3-2 victory over the Lakers.

 

Alana Mortimer started in net for the Cardinals, making 26 saves in her first appearance of the season.

 

Lake Superior State would come out the gates fast, scoring just 2:13 into the contest, but Concordia would respond at the 12:35 mark with a Grace Dodgson goal to even the game. Skyler Croft would add an assist on the score. LSSU would pick up another goal later in the frame and carried the one goal advantage into the first intermission. 

 

The second period was a lock down, defensive battle, as Alana Mortimer would make all 11 saves in the frame and neither side would find the back of the net, making it a 2-1 game as both sides entered the 3rd period. 

 

In the final frame, Concordia would strike back, as Grace Dodgson picked up an unassisted goal at the 10:53 mark of the period to tie the contest once again. Just 42 seconds later, Dakota Harmon would find the back of the net for the eventual game winning goal, with Mortimer making 8 saves in another perfect period to secure the Cardinal victory. Emma Shore recorded the helper on the score. 

 

 

The Cardinals will be back in action tomorrow, January 28th for a rematch with the same Lake Superior State opposition. Puck drop is set for noon at the Big Bear Ice Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, MI.
