Women's Hockey falls to #6 Michigan in season finale

(Ann Arbor, MI) - Concordia Women's Hockey headed across town to Yost Ice Arena for the battle of Ann Arbor on Sunday afternoon, facing off with the 6th-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines. The Cardinals got off to a fast start and were the first team to score, but the Wolverines responded with an emphatic 5-1 victory by the end of the contest.

 

Alana Mortimer started in net for the Cardinals, making an impressive 42 saves in the effort.

 

Concordia got on the board first later in the opening frame, as Emma Shore converted on a goal with 4:16 to go in the first period off an assist by Sydney Orkisz. The Cardinals continued to maintain the pressure on the Wolverines, outshooting them 12-10 in the opening 20 minutes as the team's went into the first break with the score 1-0 in favor of CUAA.

 

The Wolverines would flip the script in the second, howevver, scoring less than 3 minutes into the frame and drawing 3 powerplays in the period, which would eventually result in another pair of Michigan goals. After outshooting Concordia 18-9 in the frame, the Wolverines led by a score of 3-1 heading into the final intermission of regulation. 

 

The third period remained close, as the Cardinals were able to keep the deficit within 2 goals for most of the frame, until another Michigan powerplay goal with 2:54 to go in the contest put the result of the game on ice. The Wolverines picked up another goal less than a minute later, and would finish the win with a final advantage of 5-1 as time expired.

 

This was the Concordia Women's Hockey team's final contest of the season, finishing the year with 8 wins (a program record), 14 losses (including a pair in overtime), and a singular tie.
