Cardinals take two from Wright State-Lake on Saturday

(Fairborn, OH) For the Cardinals' second weekend of the 2020 season, Concordia traveled south to face the Lakers of Wright State-Lake. The "Diamond Cards" completed a clean sweep of the Lakers, winning all four of the games between Saturday and Sunday by an average margin of five runs.

Game 1 | Saturday February 22nd, 1:00 PM

Concordia 10 - Wright State-Lake 4

  • Billy Blair started on the mound for the Cardinals and dealt four innings for the Cards while only allowing one run and one hit. Blair struck out three batters as he went on to earn the win for Concordia.
  • The Cardinals drew first blood when a Dylan Steinke brought home two runs with a double in the second inning.
  • Wright State-Lake answered in the next inning with Blair giving up his lone run on an RBI single.
  • Concordia's offense exploded in the fourth when the heart of the lineup drove in four runs. They came by way of a Calvin Syrjala walk, Grant Steinborn sacrifice fly, and a Jordan Sherman 2-run single.
  • The offense reignited in the final inning with another four runs through Victor Diaz and Steinborn singles and a Syrjala triple which plated two.
  • Joe Tany pitched the final three innings for Concordia, giving up three unearned runs in the seventh and securing the save.

Game 2 | Saturday February 22nd, 3:00 PM

Concordia 7 - Wright State-Lake 3

  • Concordia's lineup made quick work of the Lakers in the first inning, scoring four runs through an error, groundout, and Steinborn single which brought home two.
  • Steinborn took the mound for Concordia in their second game Saturday. The southpaw went five innings deep to earn the win for the Cards. He allowed three runs and struck out three batters as well.
  • One of those three runs came in the first inning, but Victor Diaz scored another run in the second on a passed ball to keep the lead at four.
  • The Cards tacked on another two runs in the fourth inning by way of a Wright State-Lake balk and error.
  • Steinborn allowed a pair of runs in the fifth which would go on to be the final runs in the game.
  • Brendan Lyons and Elijah Abenth came on in relief for Concordia, giving up no runs and three baserunners in the two innings between the two of them.

Next weekend the Cardinals will return to Ohio for another four game series on Saturday and Sunday. Concordia will face Shawnee State at 1:00 PM both days.
