Baseball takes 3 of 4 from Roosevelt; Diaz Named WHAC Player of the Week

(Chicago, IL) – The Concordia Baseball team traveled to Chicago, Illinois for a 4-game series with Roosevelt University this past weekend. The Cardinals extended their winning streak to 10 games through the first two contests but dropped the third game in extra innings before defeating the Lakers in the fourth game. Concordia outscored the Lakers 51-20 in the series to improve to 13-3 on the season.

The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) announced their weekly awards on Monday afternoon and named Victor Diaz (SR/Guarenas, Venezuela ) as the Player of the Week. Diaz batted .471 from the plate, totaling 8 hits, stealing 3 bases, and driving in 10 runs in the Cardinals four game series in Chicago. This is the first time that the WHAC has honored Diaz this season but the second time that he has received player of the week honors. The National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) recognized Diaz for his efforts from the previous week and named him the NCCAA Baseball Student-Athlete of the Week.

Game 1 Highlights – Concordia 13, Roosevelt 3

  • Adam Purdy (SR/Lima, OH) hit a bases-clearing triple to drive in 3 runs early for the Cardinals
  • Calvin Syrjala (JR/Greenville, MI) notched 2 hits, 1 RBI, and scored a team-high 3 runs.
  • Vann Acker (SR/Eaton Rapids, MI), Victor Diaz, Preston Sherman (SR/Homer, MI), Matthew Botti (SR/Decatur, MI), and Cole Southworth (SR/Decatur, MI) all drove in 1 RBI each.
  • Billy Blair (JR/St. Charles, MI) held the Lakers to 3 runs (2 earned) in 5 innings of work while adding 4 strikeouts.
  • The Cardinals scored 3 runs in 4 out of the 7 innings.

Game 2 Highlights – Concordia 18, Roosevelt 1

Game 3 Highlights – Concordia 9, Roosevelt 10 (F/10)

  • Cole Southworth got the Cardinals on the board in the 3rd inning with his solo home run.
  • Grant Steinborn's 3-run blast gave the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.
  • Concordia trailed 7-4 in the top of the 6th after a five run inning from the Lakers in the 5th until Victor Diaz hit a moon shot over the fence to tie the game at 7.
  • The game was pushed to extra innings with neither team scoring in the 7th, 8th, or 9th innings.
  • Victor Diaz answered the call with a 2-run double to give the Cardinals a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the 10th inning.
  • The Lakers scored 3 runs by finding the gaps in the Cardinals' defense, ending Concordia's 10-game win streak.

Game 4 Highlights – Concordia 11, Roosevelt 6

The Cardinals will depart on their annual Spring Break trip to Florida later this week, with a pit stop in Kentucky for a double header with Alice Lloyd on Thursday, March 12th. First pitch for the first game is set for 2pm.
