(Ann Arbor, MI) – The Concordia baseball team got back in the win column with two big wins over the Wolverines in a scheduled non-conference series.
Game 1 – CUAA 13, UMD 3
Logan Morris got the start for the Cardinals, his second of the season, and gave the Cardinals a solid outing. Morris went 5 innings, giving up 3 runs and 1 walk, while getting a strikeout.
The Cardinal offense was the story of the game, as they jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Justin Kozlowski got hit by a pitch to drive in the first run of the game. Tyler Wressel then lined out on a sac-fly to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, with the bases loaded up again, Alex Czyzewski hit a bases-clearing triple, and then later scored.
In the second inning the Cardinals continued their success as Derek Hebner started the scoring with a one-run triple, where he later scored. Tyler Wressel then hit a team-high 5th homerun of the season, which gave the Cardinals a 9-1 lead after 2 innings.
The scoring didn't stop for the Cardinals, Jake Kuhlman scored Harrison Ryan on a 3rd inning single. Garrett Williams brought in a run in the 4th on a sacrifice bunt, and Matthew Dubrick continued to swing the bat well as he tallied another extra-base hit which scored another Cardinal run. The Cardinals got more insurance in the 6th inning on another Gavin Williams RBI.
Ethan Pollard pitched the last 2 innings for the Cardinals, giving up just 2 hits and 1 walk, and tallying 3 strikeouts.
The Cardinals continued their aggressiveness on the basepaths, Clayton McKinstry, Alex Czyzewski, Tyler Lawson all successfully stole bases, while Jake Kuhlman tallied 2, and Harrison Ryan 3.
Game 2 – CUAA 12, UMD 2
The Cardinals looked to continue their dominance over the Wolverines in the second game of the doubleheader, and they did exactly that with another strong showing.
Evan Jasiak got the start in the second game and put up a great outing as he went 4 scoreless innings, giving up only 4 hits, 1 walk, and tallied 5 strikeouts.
Once again, the Cardinal offense made a lot of noise early on as they batted all the way around in each of the first 2 innings. Matthew Dubrick hit another double, where he scored a few pitches later on a Jake Kuhlman single. Kuhlman later scored on a passed ball, followed by a Tyler Wressel single which scored Derek Hebner, putting the Cardinals up 3-0. Josh Burke then hit a sacrifice fly to score Tyler Lawson, in place of Wressel. Alex Piotrowski then picked up his 2nd homerun of the season, giving the Cardinals a 5-0 lead after the 1st inning.
The Cardinals were just as hot in the second inning, as Jake Kuhlman picked up another RBI when Matthew Dubrick scored on a groundout. Justin Kozlowski hit an RBI double that scored Derek Hebner, and Kozlowski later scored on a Josh Burke RBI double. Alex Piotrowski brought in another run on a groundout, which gave the Cardinals a 9-0 lead after two innings of play.
Dylan Kintz pitched the 5th inning for the Cardinals, where he gave up no hits, no walks and picked up a strikeout.
In the bottom half of the 5th inning the Cardinals got back on the scoreboard as Ty Shornack hit a sac-fly to score Darren Pagel, followed by Garrett Williams scoring on a wild pitch.
Marcus Bugeja pitched the 6th inning for Concordia, where he gave up 1 hit and picked up 1 strikeout victim.
In the 6th inning Ty Shornack smoked a double that scored Matthew Dubrick for the Cardinals' final run of the weekend.
Brad Oltersdorf got the final nod for the Cardinals as he closed out the game giving the Cardinals a 12-2 victory, and weekend sweep at home.
The Cardinals have a busy week ahead of them as they start a series of games at home. Wednesday, the Cardinals will host Siena Heights for a doubleheader at 1PM, followed by a double header at home against Lourdes on Saturday at 1PM. The Cardinals will close out next week with another series against Michigan-Dearborn at home on Sunday at 1PM.
