(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) has announced their yearly awards and several Concordia Cardinals were named among the two All-Conference teams. The awards were highlighted by a duo of Cardinals being named to the First Team All-Conference.
These players were voted on by coaches before the start of postseason. All stats mentioned are as of the final regular season game on April 27.
FIRST TEAM
Tyler Wressel | Senior | Paw Paw, Michigan
Wressel makes an appearance on the WHAC First Team All-Conference after having the third highest batting average in the WHAC this season at 0.410. Wressel added 66 hits and 52 RBIs this season, which were 5th and 7th respectively. He also tied for second in the conference with 11 home runs.
Jake Kuhlman | Senior | West Bloomfield, Michigan
The Cardinals second baseman led the team with 68 hits and recorded a 0.407 batting average which were 3rd and 4th in the WHAC respectively. Kuhlman also was able to reach base 51.4% of the time (3rd in the WHAC). His eight home runs on the year were the 10th best in the conference this season. Kuhlman also led the WHAC in stolen bases with 49.
SECOND TEAM
Gus Simon | Sophomore | Warren, Michigan
Simon is making his first appearance on an All-Conference team. He tallied a 0.344 batting average this season with an on-base percentage of 0.413. Simon also accumulated 55 hits on the year, which was 13th in the WHAC. Simon was second in the WHAC with 35 stolen bases.
Trey Acker | Junior | Eaton Rapids, Michigan
Acker's first All-Conference appearance came this season as he recorded the third best ERA, among qualified pitchers, at 3.72 while recording a 7-1 record. Acker recorded 34 strikeouts on the year which was 25th in the conference.
Josh Burke | Senior | Macomb, Michigan
Burke makes his second straight appearance on the WHAC Second Team. The Cardinal third baseman led the conference in homeruns with 19 and RBI with 68. He also had the highest slugging percentage at 0.804. An extra base machine, Burke was tied with teammate Tyler Wressel for the second most in the WHAC with 31.
ALL-DEFENSIVE TEAM
Tyler Wressel | Senior | Paw Paw, Michigan
The Cardinals everyday catcher appeared in all 50 games this season. Over 304 total chances, Wressel made 280 putouts (3rd in the WHAC) with 22 assists while only having 2 errors. Wressel's fielding percentage this season was 0.993.
Derek Hebner | Senior | Harbor Springs, Michigan
Derek Hebner earned his first All-Defensive Team nod with a 0.995 fielding percentage. He only had one error on the season, while recording 178 putouts (11th in the WHAC) and 22 assists at first base.
Jake Kuhlman | Senior | West Bloomfield, Michigan
Concordia's everyday second baseman played in all 50 games for the Cardinals this season and sported a 0.982 fielding percentage. Kuhlman only recorded four errors on the season compared to his 113 assists, which was tied for fourth in the conference, and 104 putouts.
Gus Simon | Sophomore | Warren, Michigan
The Cardinal outfield appeared in 49 games this season and recorded a perfect fielding percentage in the outfield. Over 110 total chances he made 104 putouts with 6 assists.
CHAMPIONS OF CHARACTER
Harrison Ryan was recognized as the team's WHAC Champion of Character. The grad student was honored for his commitment to the five core values of integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship, and servant leadership.
ALL-ACADEMIC
The WHAC announced their All-Academic teams, which involve being a sophomore in Academic standing and having a cumulative GPA of 3.25. The 27 Cardinals honored were Trey Acker, Marcus Bugeja, Alex Czyzewski, Matthew Dubrick, Derek Hebner, Kyle Hebner, Logan Hylek, Evan Jasiak, Ryan Kotecki, Justin Kozlowski, Tyler Lawson, Bryon Mane, Zach Matthews, Clayton McKinstry, Logan Morris, Drew Murphy, Brad Oltersdorf, Darren Pagel, Ethan Pollard, Harrison Ryan, Gus Simon, Ben Steele, Ryan VanSlambrouck, Blake Weaver, Aaron West, Kyle Winslow, and Tyler Wressel.
