(Ann Arbor, MI)- The Concordia University Baseball Team continued their conference games against the Lourdes University Gray Wolves. The Cardinals used big early innings in each game to win both games 9-1 and 16-2.
Game 1 - Concordia 9, Lourdes 1
Logan Morris started on the mound for the Cardinals and threw five innings allowing one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Blake Weaver relieved him in the sixth inning and threw two innings allowing no runs on no hits with two strikeouts.
The Cardinals got on the board early in the second inning on a walk from Justin Kozlowski and a double by Gus Simon followed by a double from Alex Piotrowski that scored them both.
Harrison Ryan hit a single that scored Piotrowski to put the Cardinals up 3-0 going into the third inning.
Concordia scored two more runs in the third inning on a double from Derek Hebner followed by a two-run home run from Josh Burke to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
Lourdes would get on the board in the sixth inning on an Andrew Arntson double that scored
A.J. Brinson. In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cardinals would respond with four runs that started on a solo home run from Piotrowski. Matthew Dubrick singled followed by another single from D. Hebner. Burke would hit his second home run of the game to score Dubrick and the pinch-runner Alex Czyzewski to make it a 9-1 ballgame, which would be the final score.
Game 2- Concordia 15, Lourdes 2
Drew Murphy started the second game for the Cardinals throwing four innings allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Landen Harris came in for Murphy in the fifth inning and threw two innings giving up no runs or hits with five strikeouts. Kenneth (Dave) Rozmys came in for Harris in the seventh inning allowing no runs on one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
To start the bottom of the first inning for the Cardinals, Dubrick walked followed by a two-run home run from Jake Kuhlman to make it a 2-0 game going into the second inning.
Concordia would score ten runs in the bottom of the second inning starting with a Gus Simon single, Piotrowski hit by pitch, and a Dubrick walk. Kuhlman followed all that up with a grand slam home run scoring them all and picking up his sixth RBI of the game in just the second inning. D. Hebner and Burke would both hit singles and Tyler Wressel would hit a single up the
middle to score both D. Hebner and Burke to make it 8-0. The Cardinals would load up the bases again on hit-by-pitches from both Kozlowski and Simon and then Ryan also got hit by the pitch to score the courtesy runner Tyler Lawson. The Cardinals would tack on another run on a Dubrick hit by pitch to score Kozlowski to make it 10-0. Kuhlman picked up his eighth RBI of the game on a two-run single that scored Simon and Ryan to make it a 12-0 ballgame going into the third inning.
In the top of the third inning, the Gray Wolves got on the board with a solo home run from Zane Mullins to make it a 12-1 game going into the bottom of the third. In the bottom of the third inning, Garrett Williams, the courtesy runner for the catcher Wressel, scored on a passed ball to push the Cardinal advantage to 13-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, Lourdes would add another run on an Arntson single that would score Jackson Kennedy. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Clayton McKinstry would hit a single followed by a Kuhlman single that scored him for Kuhlman's ninth RBI on the day to make it
14-2. Dubrick would score on a Czyzewski fielder's choice to shortstop to make it 15-2 going into the fifth inning.
In the fifth inning, McKinstry would reach on a fielder's choice and scored Lawson to make it a 16-2 ballgame.
The Gray Wolves would not score any runs in the sixth or seventh innings, which would put the conference run rule into effect and ended the game.
The Cardinals will continue their conference play tomorrow, March 22nd against the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines. The first pitch of the doubleheader will be at noon at the Cardinal Baseball Field.
