Late rally falls short for Men's Basketball against Cornerstone

(Grand Rapids, MI) – Concordia men's basketball traveled to Cornerstone on Tuesday night as they continued WHAC conference play. The Cardinals came in 8-12 (3-10 WHAC) while the Golden Eagles entered 13-8 (7-4 WHAC).  CUAA made a strong comeback effort late in the game, but Cornerstone held on for an 82-69 win.

Kip French led the team with 20 points.  Colton Ritsema and Jayden Priddy tied for second with 13 points apiece.  Devyn Jones was also in double figures with 12 points.  Colton Ritsema, D'Angelo Stoxstill and Jayden Priddy tied for a team-high 4 rebounds each.

Jayden Priddy had the Cardinals' first basket with a deep 3-pointer.  Devyn Jones drove for a layup and a hook shot from Colton Ritsema gave Concordia a 7-6 lead.  Kip French knocked down two 3-pointers as the lead shifted between the teams.

Cornerstone jumped out to a 22-13 lead but Devyn Jones cut into the lead with an old-fashioned three-point play.  Jayden Priddy made two free throws and Zac Clark scored off a pick and roll.  Priddy added a jumper and a Matt Lockhart triple cut the deficit to 27-25.  Lockhart and Priddy continued to pace the offense but CUAA trailed 38-31 at halftime.

Devyn Jones ended a 7-0 Cornerstone run with a layup.  Colton Ritsema knocked down a 3-pointer and Kip French made free throws as the Cardinals hung around.  D'Angelo Stoxstill hit a midrange jumper and a 3-pointer from French made the score 60-45 near the midway point.

A Jayden Priddy layup started an 8-1 CUAA run to pull within single digits.  Colton Ritsema had 5 points in the run and Kip French was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and made all free throws.  A triple from Ritsema and a drive from Jayden Priddy trimmed the deficit to just 68-62.

Concordia stayed close with a layup from Devyn Jones and a quick drive from Kip French.  However, the Golden Eagles were eventually able to reclaim their lead in the final minutes to secure the 82-69 win.

Concordia will return to action on Wednesday, February 2 when they travel to rival Siena Heights at 8pm.
