Volleyball competes in Day 2 of Amber McClure Fayerweather Tournament

(Upland, IN) – Concordia volleyball competed in day 2 of the Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament on the campus of Taylor University on Saturday.  The Cardinals had an early morning start, competing at 9am against Mount Vernon Nazarene and falling 3-1.  The second contest with Governors State went a full five sets, but CUAA narrowly fell 3-2 in that contest.

 

 

MVNU 3, CUAA 1

Kayla Peters led the Cardinals with 19 kills.  McKenzie Peters had a team-high 20 digs and Abigail Austin accumulated 40 assists.

 

Concordia jumped out to a quick start, winning set 1 by a score of 25-17.  Set 2 went right down to the wire, requiring extra points to decide but MVNU barely pushed ahead and won 26-24 to even the match.  The Cardinals continued to battle hard, but MVNU took set 3 and set 4 by identical 25-20 scores to finish off the game.

 

 

GSU 3, CUAA 2

Kaitlin Veihl led the team with 3 blocks while tying Kayla Peters with 14 kills, but it was Claudia Grepke who led the team with 21 kills.  Abigail Austin led the Cardinals with an impressive 63 assists.  McKenzie Peters had a team-high 20 digs.

 

Concordia started out strong once again, winning set 1 by a score of 25-18.  Set 2 required extra points to decide with Governors State squeaking out a hard-fought 28-26 win.  The Cardinals bounced back in set 3, claiming a 25-18 win, but GSU countered with a 25-21 win in set 4 forcing a tiebreaker.  While set 5 was closely contested, Concordia fell 15-13 in the final set.

 

 

Concordia will return to action next week when they travel to Bethel for the Bethel University Tournament on September 3 and 4.  On Friday (Sept 3), CUAA plays Cumberland at 3:00pm and Saint Francis (ILL) at 7pm.
