Volleyball falls to Saints in first WHAC contest of season

(Ann Arbor, MI) - The Concordia Cardinals volleyball team returned home for the first time since August 24th to face off against the Saints of Aquinas College. The Cardinals came into the match with a 4-6 record, while the Saints were 4-5. Concordia fought hard in all three sets, having at least a five-point lead in each, but eventually fell to the Saints in straight sets. 

 

The Cardinals were led in the match by Kayla Peters with 11 kills. Abigail Austin had a team-high 24 assists. While McKenzie Peters anchored the back line with 20 digs. 


Set 1 - AQ 25, CUAA 22

 

Concordia took an early 10-5 lead as they were paced by Kayla Peters with multiple kills and blocks. The set remained even until the Saints would score 11 of the final 13 points in the first set. A kill from Breann June gave the Cardinals a late 22-21 lead but Aquinas was able to take the final four points of the set to win it 25-22.


Set 2 - AQ 25, CUAA 20

 

The Cardinals came out hot early again as a 8-3 lead forced a Saints timeout as Concordia took advantage of multiple Aquinas errors. The Cards would get some key kills from Abigail Austin, Tara Drinane and Madalyn Liseman for the 14-13 lead. After five straight points from the Saints, Concordia six of the next eight points to go down 21-20, before the final four points came from Aquinas.


Set 3 - AQ 25, CUAA 18

 

The Saints jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead before a couple kills from Kayla Peters and Ellen Stolz gave CUAA a 7-5 lead. Despite a late 5-2 run by the Cardinals, the Saints would pull off the 25-18 set win for the straight set win. 


The Cardinals will return to the court on Friday September 17 at 7 PM when the Blue Devils of Lawrence Tech University visit the Cardinal Fieldhouse.
