(Marion, IN) - Concordia football traveled to #3 Indiana Wesleyan for a critical MSFA Mideast Division matchup. The Cardinals fought valiantly and kept the game close, but the Wildcats eventually pulled away for a 48-24 win.
Colby Kohmescher threw for 260 yards and a touchdown while also leading the ground attack with 118 yards and a rush touchdown. James Carpenter also recorded a rushing touchdown in the game. Jordan Garcia led receivers with 125 yards and a touchdown.
On defense, Ethan Burrows led the team with 12 tackles and an interception. Gabe Whitmore was second with eight tackles along with an interception. Evan Pittenger and Liam Karry tied for third with seven tackles apiece.
Concordia received the opening kickoff to begin the game. Indiana Wesleyan forced a turnover on the team's first drive, but Gabe Whitmore came up with an interception to get the ball right back. The Wildcats held on defense and scored two touchdowns for an early lead. The Cardinals answered with a 40-yard field goal from Caiden Thomas and trailed 14-3 after the first quarter.
The Cardinal defense held Indiana Wesleyan to a field goal early in the second quarter. The offense converted when Colby Kohmescher called his own number and broke an exciting 72-yard touchdown run up the middle. Indiana Wesleyan responded with a touchdown drive, but the Cardinals countered again with a big play when Colby Kohmescher found Jordan Garcia for a 73-yard touchdown. Indiana Wesleyan led 24-17 at halftime.
On the first drive of the third quarter, Ethan Burrows made an interception to set the offense up at the IWU 26-yard line. The Cardinals drove into the red zone, but the Wildcat defense forced a missed field goal attempt. CUAA held Indiana Wesleyan to just a field goal in the third quarter and trailed 27-17.
Indiana Wesleyan began to pull away in the fourth quarter with three successful touchdown drives. The Cardinals were able to score in the final minutes with a 9-play, 75-yard drive. Jon Jasionowski picked up a 21-yard gain after reversing field multiple times and James Carpenter eventually punched in a 1-yard rushing touchdown. However, the Cardinals fell 48-24 as time expired.
Concordia will celebrate Senior Day next Saturday, November 9th, when they host Lawrence Tech at 1pm in Ferry Field at Cardinal Stadium.
