Cardinals Downed By Wolverines

(Dearborn, MI) – Concordia men's basketball went on the road Wednesday evening to face UM-Dearborn in WHAC conference play. The Cardinals entered 9-17 overall and 5-11 in WHAC play while the Wolverines came in 15-11 overall and 8-8 in the WHAC. Both teams traded baskets early, but UM-Dearborn pulled away late in the 1st half and secured an 89-64 win.

Greg Alexander led Concordia with 13 points and 6 rebounds in the game. Emmanuel Dominguez was also in double figures with 11 points. Jordan Winowiecki finished third with 8 points.

Greg Alexander opened scoring with a 3-pointer and Bernard Kasanda added a layup. UM-Dearborn tied the game 5-5 but Alexander put the Cardinals back up again with a triple. Jordan Winowiecki broke an 8-8 tie with a layup over his defender at the 13:54 mark.

UM-Dearborn used a 6-1 run to take a 14-11 lead. Jerald Booker ended the run with a layup, but the Wolverines continued to lead and prompted a CUAA timeout with a 21-15 advantage at the 7:40 mark.

Paul Zysk scored a layup in the paint following the timeout and Jerald Booker added a quick drive through the defense for a basket. However, UM-Dearborn put together a 10-0 run to go ahead 34-19 with 4:08 left to play.

Jordan Winowiecki ended the run with a pair of free throws. Colton Ritsema converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Kip French drained two free throws at the 1:10 mark. After a triple by Greg Alexander with 5 seconds remaining, the Cardinals trailed 42-29 at halftime.

Jordan Winowiecki opened the 2nd half with a 3-pointer. The Wolverines responded with a 14-0 run, taking a 56-32 lead at the 15:45 mark. Paul Zysk ended the run with a layup, but UM-Dearborn continued to keep their lead above 20 points.

Bernard Kasanda used a floater to score and Damonte Bean added a layup. Emmanuel Dominguez and Matt Lockhart made 3-pointers down the stretch as the Cardinals continued to fight on offense. Dominguez stayed hot from behind the arc with another pair of triples.

Zac Clark checked into the game in the final minute and knocked down a 3-point basket. Kip French added a triple at the buzzer, but UM-Dearborn claimed the 89-64 win as time expired.

Concordia will play their next game on Saturday, February 15 when the team travels to Indiana Tech. Tip-off is set for 3pm following the conclusion of the women's game.
